The police are called early in th morning because someone has found a man’s dead body under some bushes. It is Mr. Injo, a teacher at the local secondary school. It seems that everyone they question has a motive for wanting to kill him. This is a story about some of the challenges faced by girls and women in their communities.  \nThe police were called early in the morning. Someone on the way to work in the chocolate field had found a man’s dead body under some bushes.  \nThe police looked carefully atthe area around the body and asked many questions of the people who had gathered to watch. Several of them recognised the man as Mr Injo, a teacher at the secondary  \n2 school in town.  \nThat same morning that Mr Injo was found, a university student named Stella rode the bus home to the town for the holidays. She was excited about seeing her family again! Her younger brother had grown tall, and her mother would cook her favourite food. Her father would expect a report of all that she had studied. Her friends would be happy to see her! Many things had  \n3 happened since she had  \nMeanwhile, the police went to Mr Injo’s house and talked to his wife. She had seven children who were all demanding breakfast, but when they saw the police uniforms, their eyes opened wide. Mrs Injo quickly sent the children to the neighbour’s house. And she told the police that she had not seen her husband for two days, since Monday afternoon. She went with them to the hospital  \n4 to identify his body. She  \n5  \nMrs. Injo continued,“But to be truthful, I am glad to be rid of him. He never treated me like a friend, never took notice of my opinions or what I wanted, and never cared about my feelings.”  \nShe continued, “I had to stay at home and be faithful only to him and have baby after baby, but he was free to have sex with any woman or girl he wanted! He thought that women are like cattle or pigs or goats, that we can be bought and used for work and breeding! He was disappointed when our four girls were born, angry that they were not boys. He wouldn’t help them with anything,  \n6  \nShe answered,“Just on Monday, I tried to talk to him about using family planning so that I don’t have any more children. Then I would not always be pregnant or breastfeeding, and I could satisfy him so he didn’t go looking for other women. But as usual, he wouldn’t think things through or discuss anything, but yelled and beat me again.”  \nOne of the policemen asked her,“And this argument and  \nMr Injo also had second wife. So they asked her to come and talk with  \nthem. They noticed that she wasn’t upset either that her husband had died. So of course they asked her why.  \nShe told them,“He already had one wife, but he made sure she was always either pregnant or breast feeding. He treated her like a goat …. only good for breeding lots of children! It made him feel like such a big man! He was  \n7 so selfish!  \n8  \nMany women feel that they are no better than goats or cattle, being sold by their fathers to men who want to breed lots of children. Many wives hate their husbands, but feel that they are trapped and can’t do anything about it. It is certainly not fair that women are treated that way. But the police had to write in their notes that this wife, too, certainly had a motive to kill him, and was a suspect.  \nThey asked where she had been on Monday night, and she said that she had been arguing with Mr Injo that evening,  \nThe next morning, Stella was really excited about seeing her old school friends and she went early to find one of them, Jane. It was not a long walk, and it was a cool morning. Jane had not gone to university after she graduated from school. She got a job working in a shop in town. She was happy to see Stella and they sat in the shop and talked about everything that had happened since school.  \n9
