AUTHOR…………………………………………………57  \nPREFACE  \nThe telling of this story has been in progress for morethan fifty years.However,for most of that time,it wasconceived as the story of Laura Hayna Bedi,my mother.When I attempted to write her story,it became apparent thatthe story was really about me how I had been molded by thelife experiences of both my mother and my father.So,this ismy story.  \nThis story is important because it tells about Slavicimmigrants coming to the New World during the first decadeof the twentieth century,how they lived and what adversitiesthey faced.It tells about the murder of my paternalgrandfatherin 1917 and the resulting shame,guilt,and loss of family formy father and his brother.It tells of the suicide of my maternalgrandfather,who couldn't bear the loss of the Czar's Russiaand who couldn't face the shame and guilt of incest.Finally,it tells of the intergenerational effects of child abuse,such asfurther child abuse and spousal abuse.  \nMy purposes in writing this story include helping othervictims of family situations similar to mine;accepting theparents and family I have without judgment;recording theempathy and acceptance that I’ve found;and because Ipromised that I would.  \nI have few primary sources of information.Most is basedon oral family lore.Secondary sources are presented in an  \nappendix;many of these are contradictory.Some
