THE LIFEOF ELISHA \nJ.Vernon McGee \n94 \n# When Iron Floats andWood Sinks\n\nwas the prophet for the peasants.Elijah walks out on the pageof Scripture into the court of Ahab and Jezebel and says thatthere will not be rain \"but according to my word.\"But whenyou first meet this man Elisha,he is following a yoke of oxenhitched to a plow.Elijah was a man sublime;Elisha was aman simple.Elijah was the prophet of the spectacular;Elishawas the prophet of the commonplace.Elijah was sensational;Elisha was secluded—he never sought the spotlight at all.Eli-jah,therefore,was a public man whereas Elisha was for privatemeetings and individuals.Elijah on Mt.Carmel brought downfire from heaven and destroyed the prophets of Baal.Elishain Dothan prayed that his servant might have his eyes openedto see that the horses and chariots of the Lord were filling themountain where they were. This man Elijah was like Johnthe Baptist, while Elisha was more like our Lord.Elijah wasthe man of the whirlwind, the fire, and the earthquake;Elishadealt with the hunger of the poor and the healing of bodies.Elijah was the prophet with a fanfare of trumpets—he wasnoisy and he was brassy.Elisha was like a modest violet, ashrinking violet, and he was subdued in his methods.Elijahwas an extrovert;Elisha was an introvert. But both were God'smen at God's time in God's tremendous ministry. \nOur attention will center now on Elisha.I do not thinkthat any miracle so reveals the character of a person and aprophet as the miracle of the floating axhead. And the sons of the prophets said unto Elisha,Be- \nhold now,the place where we dwell with thee is too \nsmall for us.[2 Kings 6:1]. \nNow this reveals something of the popularity of Elisha.Hetaught in a theological seminary, the school of the prophets. The school grew, and they needed larger quarters. This wasdue to the presence and the popularity of Elisha. The strength,I feel, and the value of any school is the character and the \nability of those who teach. It is not the methods but the menthat are important, especially in a Christian school. It's not somuch stuff that we need, but it's staff. Our need is not largerbuildings but bigger men.It is not endowments that are neededtoday, but enduements of spiritual power. It's not money, butmorals that are needed. It was said of Johns Hopkins, forwhom one of the great universities is named, that when he saton the end of a log and a student sat on the other end of thelog—that was a school.Today they think that they must haveall the buildings and all the equipment imaginable—and thesecompensate for the lack of faculty. The schools of America to-day are not suffering from a housing shortage, they are suffer-ing from a character shortage. It is not more pay that is need-ed,but more spiritual power;not earned degrees, but depen-dence on the Spirit of God that is needed in this hour.Oh,fora man like Elisha! And this man taught in the school of theprophets. \nNow notice what they did.In order to enlarge the schoolthey said, \nLet us go,we pray thee, unto the Jordan, and takethere every man a beam, and let us make a place there, where we may dwell. And he answered,Go [2 Kings \n6:2]. \nThe students built their own school. That would be an unusualthing in our day.Today everything has to be given to thestudents in order to get them through school and if it doesn'tsuit them, they rebel. But these students went out to work, andElisha encouraged them in it. \nAnd one said,Be content,I pray thee, and go withthy servants. And he answered,I will go [2 Kings \n6:3]. \nThis is a refreshing and thrilling verse. It is an insight intothe winsome character of Elisha. It reveals that he was popular \nwith the students.By the way,do students ordinarily want totake their teacher with them beyond the boundary of the cam-pus?They'd like to leave him there. But these asked Elisha togo with them.He was somewhat of a square,by the way, anunusual individual, but these students wanted him to go along. \nSo he went with them. And when they came ","cbCaipfgTAVfwF0Q","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipfgTAVfwF0Q","pdf",1829277,34,"English","# When Iron Floats and Wood Sinks\n## Elisha’s Character and
