Postma(1868-1963)was born in the Frisian village of Koarnwert(Dutch:Cornwerd),on the shores of what was then still called the Zuiderzee. He studied mathematics and physics in Amsterdam, taking his doctorate in1895 under the supervision of J.D.van der Waals, who won the Nobel Prizein 1910.Postma became a respected figure in the world of science and was incontact with the most important Dutch scientists of his time. \nPostma was to owe his greatest fame not to his scientific work, however, but to his poetry in the Frisian language. He wrote his firstpoems in about 1900 and built up a large body of work during his longlife, gradually acquiring an enduring reputation not only in Friesland butwithin the context of Dutch culture. As recently as 1997 a generousselection of his work appeared in Dutch translation, entitled Van hetFriese land en het Friese leven;this soon achieved a second printing, andreceived much attention in the Dutch national press. In 1998,for the firsttime,a selection of his work appeared in a German translation. \nPostma's poetic beginnings are firmly rooted in Romanticism.Earlyinfluences on his work include the Dutch poets Herman Gorter and AlbertVerwey,as well as the English poet William Wordsworth.Herman Gorterhad written a great epic poem,Mei,in which such themes as youth, springand mortality are situated in a thoroughly Dutch landscape. It wasprobably Gorter who inspired Postma to use the Frisian landscape of hisyouth, with its meadows, waterways and little villages,as the setting forhis poems. The sober,down-to-earth tone of Gorter's masterpiece mustalso have appealed to him. \nIn his early collections in particular Postma took delight in returning tohis early years.'A child's delight in all of human life,/That is thehappiness which I hold dear',he wrote in the poem 'Childhood’,in whichhe refers fondly to the intensity with which the child takes in the world \n5 \naround him,and to his unbounded appetite for new experiences.Inanother poem,'Autumn',he describes how on a quiet, dark Sunday hedirects his thoughts to life as it was lived in the village of his childhood:'How the old life lives on in me.Yonder I see /The autum...'And thencome concrete descriptions of that life. \nFor Postma such memories are, however, invariably taken up in amoment of poetic-philosophical reflection. In the closing stanza of'Autumn'he refers to the meaning of his memories,to the task they sethim:‘Oh to know the people in me,whom I feel and bear!/Without aprint of deed my work won't find its goal!'The contemplation and poeticprocessing of 'deed'-the lives and activities of the villagers-givemeaning to his existence.'Childhood'concludes in a similar vein: \nAnd all those miracles life had to give,Riches in an unending copious flow, \nAcross long years sometimes project their light,A moment with the same bright golden glow. \nThe English-speaking reader of these lines will not be surprised to learnthat Postma loved the poetry of Wordsworth, the poet whose 'Intimationsof Mortality'were drawn from‘Recollections of ","cbCaifG2BFZNBJ8a","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaifG2BFZNBJ8a","pdf",5306188,146,"English","# Introduction\n## Obe
