The speakers compare contributions, store purchases, interest on capital, and annual distributions, showing how members’ profits accumulate over time. \nToM:Thought it over!yes;and how can we,who aretroubled to pay our way, save f£l to give you to keep for usand then buy our shop things off you at the same price wepay at other places? What is the good of it? \nJoHN:Well,if you have five minutes to spare I will tellyou the good it has been to me;and don't forget,it mighthave been the same good to you if you had joined thesociety when I did. Now,in the first place,I must tell youthat I have had a hard struggle to make both ends meet, but I find now Iam better off every year, and I should liketo hear you say the same,Tom.But to my story. It wasabout ten years ago our society was started, and I joinedsome fourteen months after, and paid in 6d.per week forforty weeks—that made me up one share;but before Ihad paid this forty weeks'subscription there was put in mybook by our secretary 19s.10d.,and E1.2s.5d.;80,insteadof my having fl only,I had E3.28.3d. \nToM:Well (but excuse my interrupting you),what righthad your secretary,as you call him,to put money in yourbook that you had never paid? That is just what I hearof societies like yours;everything is not quite rigit.I \n2 \nnever find that the secretary of our club puts me downmore money than I pay,not he. \nJoHN:I will tell you how it was.I had spent at thestores £46.3s,in those forty weeks, and it was found at theend of the first six months'trading that we had paid ourstoreman £102.13s.9d.more for our goods than we as asociety had paid to the wholesale merchant,so after payingthe storeman's wages, our rent, and all other expenses, with interest at 5 per cent per annum on every completedE1 of capital,we had £40.1s.6d.to share amongst thosewho had traded with us,and my share was 19s.10d.;and thenext six months, when I had dealt at the stores the wholetwenty-six weeks,my share was £1.2s.5d.;so you see Iwas fairly entitled to the f£2.2s.3d.over the £1 I had paidinto the society.Well,so I have been going on ever since.Our“divi.,”as we call it,has been as low as 2d.in the E,and it has been as high as 1s.4d.,but I have never paid anymore into the society, nor have I ever drawn any out, butlet the share of my profits remain, upon which I got 1severy year upon each completed £l as interest, and I havenow standing to my credit £27.10s.1d.;80 you see I havegained in about eight years and a half £26.10s.1d.on my \n£1.Now,I think, that is a proof that it has done me somegood;don't you? \nToM:Well,I never thought it was anything like that.Ishould feel quite independent if I had got E27. \nJoHN:You might have had,Tom.Your family is aslarge as mine, and you have boys and girls growing up thatearn a little, and want a great deal to feed and clothe themwith.I am sure you must spend on flour, grocery, provisions, and coal as much as I do,and you might just as wellhave had £27 as to be as you are, without a pound to layyour hand on.And the best of it is,it would have made nodifference to me if you had £27,or even more, becaue thatwould be the profit on your t","cbCaieJotVtqM5zn","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaieJotVtqM5zn","pdf",310553,"English","# The Question of Value\n## Reasons for Not Joining\n## The Cooperative’s Dividend and Profit","[{\"question\":\"What financial argument does John make when Tom doubts the cooperative’s safety?\",\"answer\":\"John argues that although members withdraw money, the society remains solvent because retained capital and ongoing profits cover claims.
