Describes mass extinctions, including the timing of the major event about 65 million years ago, the scale of life wiped out, and how some species survived while others failed. \nThere have been many theories to explain theend of the dinosaurs. Some theories are \ninteresting,but are now thought to be false. As weget more information about our world and theuniverse, some ideas seem more possible thanothers. We may still be a long way from findingreal proof of what happened to the dinosaurs. \n# Mass Extinctions\n\nDinosaurs lived on Earth for about 140 millionyears.About 65 million years ago, they \ndisappeared.Some scientists think that they alldied out at the same time.Other scientists believethey died out gradually. All scientists agree thatdinosaurs were not the only creatures to diearound the same time. Many other animals andplants were affected.Scientists believe that 65percent of all life on Earth was wiped out.Whenmany species die,it is called a mass extinction. \nScientists believe that this is not the only massextinction ever to have occurred. There may havebeen many others. They think that one massextinction about 250 million years ago wiped out95 percent of life on Earth. \nThe strange thing about these mass extinctionsis that not everything dies. Some species livethrough them.Animals such as crocodiles andalligators lived on after the dinosaurs died.Snakesand lizards were hardly affected at all.Turtles livedto see another day. Many mammals survived.Evenamphibians, such as frogs and salamanders, survived.Yet we think of these creatures as verysensitive to changes around them. \nDinosaurs,flying reptiles, sea reptiles and othersmall sea creatures, and many species of plantsdid not do so well.Only fossils of their bonesremain. \nSo,what happened? Was it one big event or amixture of events that spelled disaster for manyprehistoric creatures? \n# Can You Believe This?\n\nSome people once believed that flowers caused thedownfall of the dinosaurs. This may not have beenthe most believable theory, but it came from \nlogical thinking.Flowering plants were thought tohave evolved during the time of the dinosaurs.Maybe a massive dose of hay fever floored thedinosaurs!Maybe the plant-eating dinosaurscouldn't stomach the flowers. \nNow we know that flowers evolved well beforethe dinosaurs started to die.Flowers definitely hadnothing to do with it.","cbCaicN4HlfgXM5P","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaicN4HlfgXM5P","pdf",2733709,28,"English","# Mass Extinctions\n## Can You Believe This?\n## One Big Crash\n## Brought to You from Outer Space\n## An Earthly Theory\n## Glossary\n## Index","[{\"question\":\"How long did dinosaurs live on Earth before disappearing?\",\"answer\":\"Dinosaurs lived on Earth for about 140 million years, then disappeared about 65 million years ago.\"},{\"question\":\"Did all dinosaurs die at the same time?\",\"answer\":\"Some scientists believe all dinosaurs died at the same time, while others think they died out gradually.\"},{\"question\":\"Were all animals and plants wiped out during the mass extinction?\",\"answer\":\"No. Many species survived, such as crocodiles and alligators, snakes and lizards, turtles, mammals, and some amphibians, though dinosaurs and many other groups did not fare as well.\"}]","What Happened to theDinosaurs - Mass Extinctions | PDF",1790687541,43]
