Hate the fuckers, in the main. It’s as well to admit that right up front. I can’t stand the press and the eyes and the itch of them. It wasn’t always like that. Doesn’t matter.  \nNowadays I’m who I am, not who I used to be.  \nI’m a monster and I’d say that you couldn’t tell that from looking at me, except it’s not true. It’s in my eyes. Printed on my skin. I stay out of towns, much as I can, but a man has to eat. A man has to drink.  \nMy thirst is often questioned but always unquenchable.  \nThe old training kept me alive through the dirty fighting and dirtier deeds in the desert but I need the booze to dull the thinking, and the dreams. If it wasn’t for the booze, though, that training might have saved me on the day when everything changed. As it was, they caught me like a pure fool.  \nI’d been living in a long abandoned petrol station on the old road between Forfar and Dundee and, though the glass was smashed and it stunk of piss, I called it good. That was till I heard sly movements and eased myself outside, knife ready but befuddled through cheap wine. Turned too late to dodge the taser from behind. Hit the ground and they were on me.  \nI came to trussed and gagged in the back of an old land rover. Not blindfolded, just tied, immobile. The two big red haired men in front, more farmers than soldiers, knew their business.  \nOne of them glanced back.  \n“He’s awake, Angus.”  \n“Grand.”  \nBoth voices were highland Scottish. Maybe even from the islands. The driver, Angus, said,“We’ve a long drive ahead of us, tough guy. Try not to throw up or you might choke. You have to piss, you’ll just have to piss yersel. You stink anyhow.”  \nI tested the knots, tried all the tricks, but eventually had to settle and wait. My head was pounding and I needed a drink.  \nI was still needing a drink when I was dragged from the Rover, marched across a flagged courtyard between the arms of a big old country house, down some steps and, fuck me, into a basement with an iron-barred cage in it. Two cages, on either side of the room. When they started to untie me I thought I might have a chance. They had no idea who they were dealing with.  \nActually, they did. They were dealing with a guy who had been trussed tight for five hours and could barely stand.  \nI hit the floor of the cage and rolled as I’d been taught, coming to my feet in time to see the door clang shut.
