Lenten Lectures someyears ago.As I understand him,he came to theconclusion that the Church is not of this worldbut that the Church,in its mission, must workwith men who do live and act in this world.Ifthe Church is to reach and move men it mustdo so in full recognition of the problem whichman faces in his day to day life in complex, modern society. The late Pope John XXIII car-ried me further with his views on the subject ofman and society.Man is endowed with an in-nate and inalienable dignity.Man is a socialanimal and must realize himself in society.Man has rights and responsibilities in that so-ciety and must demand the one and respond tothe other. The Church,in its effort to help manto achieve salvation, must help him in theseefforts. But,man must also help himself. \nAM HONORED to have been offered thisopportunity to welcome you to the 39th annualconference of the Catholic Association for In-ternational Peace.I am particularly happythat the National Council of Churches has, forthe second year, been able to cooperate withthe Association in this conference. \nOur topic this year,\"Fostering the Peace andthe Community of Nations”,is based on Chap-ter V of Vatican Council II's Constitution onThe Church in the Modern World. We will, therefore,be addressing ourselves to the topicin terms of the role of the Church. We havebeen most fortunate in securing an excellentgroup of speakers to speak to various aspectsof the problem.I have no intention, nor thecapacity,to anticipate their presentations.Iwould like, rather,to suggest some ideas whichI believe should be kept in mind in our deliber-ations,conclusions,and future action. \nThe church is us,those who profess belief inits teaching, all of us.It will be successful inreaching and improving the modern world, inpromoting peace and the community of na-tions,only insofar as it reaches, teaches, andmoves us.Wecannot sit back and leave it tothe Pope and the Bishops, and they cannot suc-ceed without us.If enough of us will undertaketo understand the social teachings of theChurch and the situation in which they are tobe applied,we can move mountains. If themass of us will not be reached and a small cote-rie engages in intellectual discussions we willnot be a threat to a fair sized mole hill.In anydiscussions such as that in which we are hereengaged, this must be seen.So far there is little \nWeare talking in terms of the Church in theModern World.I hope I may set the stage forour discussions with a few questions andsuggestions which to me seem pertinent.Whyshould the Church be interested in the World? What is the Church? What is the ModernWorld? And,finally,in the light of the answerswe come to about these questions, what prob-lems do we face and what can the Church con-tribute to promoting Peace and Community inthat World? \nThe late Cardinal Suhard of Paris providedme with the best answer I can find to the first \nmore people, transport more people, and killmore people in a matter of minutes than ourgrandfathers would have believed possible. And,as we move into space,we accelerate tech-nical progress and the possibilities. With all ofthis man remains the same. \nreason to believe that the mass of Catholics, orof Christians as a whole, are reached ortouched, let alone moved to action.Nor is thereany persuasive evidence that they are likely tobe at any early date. \nThe world is a strange and wonderful thing. It is most important that we recognize the ex-tent to which it is strange and wonderful.Onlyin such understanding can we hope to achieveanything.I am always amazed at the extent towhich the best of us tend to overlook,avoid,orput","cbCaieL86vIxyApd","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaieL86vIxyApd","pdf",2200351,32,"English","# Welcoming and Keynote Address\n##
