The assignment should be completed and turned in on Monday, August 19 (the first day of class) . There are four parts- I estimate it will take 2-3 hours to complete the entire assignment depending on the individual. \nPlease feel free to email me with any questions you may have: [efoote@southfieldchristian.org](efoote@southfieldchristian.org) \n[I love this class as it is so applicable to our daily lives. Looking forward to working with each of you](I love this class as it is so applicable to our daily lives. Looking forward to working with each of you)! -Mrs. Foote \nPart 1 : Experimental Design \nAnswer the following questions using the following statement, your knowledge of experimental design and the graph below. Need a refresh on experimental design? Watch this video or this one. \nA salmon farmer has been keeping records concerning the water temperature and the number of salmon developing from fertilized eggs. The data is recorded below. \n\n| Water Temperature in oC | Number of developing salmon |\n| --- | --- |\n| 15 | 75 |\n| 20 | 90 |\n| 25 | 120 |\n| 30 | 140 |\n| 35 | 75 |\n| 40 | 40 |\n| 45 | 15 |\n| 50 | 0 |\n\nGraph this information below on the graph paper (make sure to label both axes and give your graph a title) : \na. ) What is the dependent variable? \nb. ) What is the independent variable? \nc. ) What is the optimum (best) temperature for salmon development? \nd. ) What is the average temperature in this experiment? \ne. ) What are some constants the scientists should consider? \nPart 2: Watch the Write Like A Scholar Series \nAn important part of AP Environmental Science is being able to communicate your understanding of the content through writing. The AP exam has three free-response questions ( FRQs) that count for 40% of your overall score. The following videos provide an introduction to get you on the path to writing successful FRQs. \nVideo 1 : Write Like A Scholar Series: Annotating AP Environmental Science FRQs \nVideo 2: Write Like A Scholar Series: Writing AP Environmental Science FRQs \nVideo 3 : Write Like A Scholar Series: Scoring AP Environmental Science FRQs \nPart 3: Math Skills (what this is a science class, why so much math?) \nThere are seven Science Practices that we will incorporate throughout the year, these are skills anda way to apply your content knowledge. \nPractice 6 is Mathematical Routines: Apply quantitative methods to address environmental concepts. \n6.A Determine an approach or method aligned with the problem to be solved. \n6. B Apply appropriate mathematical relationships to solve a problem, with work shown (e.g. , dimensional analysis) . \n6.C Calculate an accurate numeric answer with appropriate units. \nReminders \n1. Write out all your work, even if it’s something really simple. This is required on the APES exam so it will be required on all your assignments, labs, quizzes, and tests as well. \n2. Include units in each step. Your answers always need units and it’s easier to keep track of them if you write them in every step. No naked numbers! \n3. Check your work. Go back through each step to make sure you didn’t make any mistakes in your calculations. Also check to see if your answer makes sense. For example, a wolf probably will not eat \n15 million pounds of meat in a year. If you get an answer that seems unlikely, it probably is. Go back and check your work. \n4. You may use a calculator but will not be provided with a formula sheet. \nMetric Units: YOU MUST MEMORIZE THE METRIC CONVERSION CHART \n1. How many mm are in a centimeter? \n2. How many centimeters are in a meter? \n(The prefix centi-means 100. How many cents (pennies) are in a dollar?) \n3. The prefix milli-means a thousand. How many millimeters are in a meter? \nPercent Change = ( New – Original ) X 100 \nOriginal \n4.
