alchemies to makeOf fuid space a thousand violins, \nSweet Jesus, and to rouse full-blossomed springsOut of the wizened winter with casual ease. \nBut now the hour for sterner miracles \nIs struck.Catch up the honey-flowing whisperOf:Jesus!Jesus!on the tongue, and neatlyFold up the lovers'private thaumaturgyOf spring and song. \nLong,loose-boned winds are flapping \nAround a mirthless Gospel of Saint Matthew we read that the disciples came to Jesuson one occasion and asked Him:Who then is the greatest in the kingdom ofheaven? And Jesus called a little child to Him,set it in the midst of them, andsaid,Amen I say to you, unless you turn and become like little children, you willnot enter the kingdom of heaven.Whoever, therefore, humbles himself as thislittle child,he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven(18,r-4). \nThese words of our Lord recall to mind the Catholic teaching on spiritualchildhood. And this teaching takes on a special significance just now.For we arein what we might call the season of childhood. This entire month is dedicated tothe Infancy of Christ. The newly-recounted story of His birth lingers on andkeeps thrilling our hearts.Memories of Bethlehem,Egypt, and Nazareth casta spell of enchantment over us.Certainly, now is the appropriate time to reflecton those words of Christ,to search them for the divine message they containfor us.Let us,therefore, spend a few moments meditating on the Christianconcept of spiritual childhood. \nTo begin with,we should note well that our Lord doesn't tell us to be littlechildren, but to become like little children. We are religious. And if any vocationin life calls for maturity, for full adulthood,it is the religious state. The onlyreligious who gives promise of genuine success is he or
