The story then shifts to 14 months earlier, presenting Odette Adin at a funeral service marked by absence, tension, and unsettling social dynamics. Small details—interpersonal debts, awkward attendees, and the dissonance of the setting—build unease and hint at underlying secrets that connect the past to the present. She was being hauled towards the booking sergeant’s desk, flanked by two male police officers. Her arms were handcuffed behind her back; meaty hands grasped around her narrow shoulders with far greater force than Cat thought was necessary. Cat gripped the mop handle tightly as she surveyed the scene from the doorway. \nThe girl in the blue dress was nearly at the desk. Her mousy brown hair was frizzed at the ends and damp with sweat. The booking sergeant gave her the usual spiel, asking for a name, address and whether the girl had taken any drugs. Cat didn’t hear an answer, but the girl’s breathing became heavy, a low, rasping honk that moved in time with her shoulders. The booking sergeant shuffled a stack of papers uncomfortably as the girl let out a guttural wail. Retching sobs overcame her body, and she thrashed on the spot with her feet rooted to the floor, twisting her torso this way and that, as though trying to escape herself. At the exact moment Cat caught sight of the streaks of blood that covered the girl’s otherwise unblemished chest and arms, she felt her own blood drain away from her face, leaving her suddenly cold. \nThe girl had swivelled round, away from the desk, and was looking straight at her. She was so young. There was so much blood. A wave of nausea crashed over Cat as the girl stared intently across the room at her. Abruptly, she stopped crying. Silence enveloped the space and its suddenness seemed unnatural somehow. Her eyes bulged at Cat and she extended her neck towards her, sniffing her out, a deadly snake locked on \nits desert prey. Cat smelled the adrenaline that had crept over her own skin as the blood-soaked girl opened her dark mouth wide in a silent scream. \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \n2 \n14 Months Earlier \nOdette Adin knew her mum wouldn’t care that her leggings were navy blue, rather than the traditional black. The harassed-looking officiant at the front of the room thumbed through a folder, tutting loudly. One of the very first mourners to arrive had been sick directly into one of the faux plants in a pot at the end of the aisle. The incense billowing through the room wasn’t doing a very good job of covering up the smell. Cedar overlayed with somebody’slate-night lamb shawarma. The service was due to start ten minutes ago, but the man seemed to be waiting for more people to arrive.
