 \n★ ★  \nCAPITALIST PRESSWAR FEVER...  \nIS CAPITALISM SOUND?BOYCOTTFEBRUARY,1939  \n中  \nWE ACCUSE!  \nwA/E accuse those persons guilty of aiding the spreadVof Anti-Semitism of being enemies of the Church.  \nAnti-Semitism is no new phenomenon of the age.Ithas cropped up during the course of the centuries,andinvariably it has had a tragic result:the hatred of Chris-tians for Jews has in time given rise to hatred for Chris-tians by groups hating both Jews and Christians.As anold saying has it,“After they get Ike,they get Mike.”We people here in the United States have witncssed theresult of these witch-hunts,for invariably the groupstarting the witch-hunt end up by being hunted them-selves.  \nThe classic example of such a boomerang is the Drey-fuss Affair of France.  \nDuring the 1890's,in France,many French Christiansbegan to attack\"Jereish high-finance,\"which,they said,was ruining the French nation.The Jews of Francewere denounced as harsh capitalists,as treacherous ene-mies of national patriotism,and as corrupt politicians.  \nHow familiar these charges ring today;for now theJews in America are charged with being connected withhigh-finance and with un-Americanism(atheistic Com-munism).  \nThe frenzied charges of many of these French Chris-tians reached a climax when the case of Alfred Drey-fuss,a Jewish Captain of Artillery in the French Army,came to the attention of the French public.It was re-vealed in 1894 that Dreyfuss had been convicted of trea-sonable activities and sentenced to Devil's Island forbeing a spy.When some of the leading citizens ofFrance inaugurated a campaign to free Dreyfuss,whomthey said had been convicted because of his being aJew,Christians rushed into the conflict and upheld theconviction on the ground that Dreyfuss had been un-patriotic.The dramatic Emile Zola wrote his historicletter,J'Accuse,and the Dreyfuss Affair became a na-tional politico-religious question.Dreyfuss was in timefound not guilty,was pardoned,restored to his post inthe French Army,and served out a long and usefulcareer in the Army of the nation which had so wrongedhim in his youth.  \nMany Christians of France continued their violentAnti-Semetic campaign during the late 1890's,and itcame to pass that the venerable Catholic writer and so-cial reformer,Marquis de la Tour du Pin,advocated aprogram against the Jews which parallels the treatmentthe Jews are receiving today from Herr Hitler.Tourdu Pin wrote:“Treat the Jews as aliens,and dangerousaliens;recognize and forsteear all the philosophical,po-litical,and economic errors zeith rwhich they have poison-ed us;reconstitute in the economic as zwell as in the po-litical order the organs of our ozen life zohich will renderus independent of them and masters of our own house.”  \nEverywhere in France Christians linked togetherhigh-finance and Jews.  \nThis gave French anti-clericals just the opportunitythey had long waited for.They let Christians prosecutetheir campaign of Anti-Semitism,and then they turned  \nagainst these same Christians their very weapon of in-tolerance.  \nIn November of 1899 the French Government insti-tuted proceedings against some of the Catholic monasticorders in France,claiming that they were carrying onunpatriotic activities.The orders were dissolved,andthose priests and bishops who protested were summarilytreated with by the French Government.In 1901 theanti-clerical,Waldeck-Rousseau drew up and securedthe passage of the infamous Association Law of Julylst,a law which was an attack on every monastic orderin France.Among other things,this bill ordered the dis-solution,or threatened the dissolution,of any associa-tion whose members had to renounce the right to marry.  \nThe anti-clerical activities of the French Government,and the effects of the Association Law of 1901 lead tosupplementary acts of 1904 which in turn led to thesecularization of most of the schools of France.By1914,less than one-","cbCaidZZqglaG5H0","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaidZZqglaG5H0","pdf",1431287,16,"English","# We Accuse!\n## Anti-Semitism as intolerance\n## The Dreyfus Affair example\n## Double-edged consequences for the Church\n## Lessons for Christians in America","[{\"question\":\"What does “We Accuse!” accuse people of doing?\",\"answer\":\"It accuses those who aid the spread of anti-Semitism of being enemies of the Church.
