CC BY-NC-ND 4.0.  \nThis book is part of the SIL Cameroon Branch Mother Tongue Based Multilingual Education 5th year reading curriculum.  \nWaza  \nWhile James had been staying with his uncle Matthew in Maroua he had the chance to visit the Waza National Park. He had to get up before it was light and travel north for nearly 2 hours in the dark to get to the gates of Waza .  \nAt the gates there were toilets to use and a reception centre to pay for entry into the park. Each car had to collect an official guide who would travel with them and tell them all about the animals .  \nThe guide explained that passengers could only get out of the car when he said it was safe, and that they must stay close to the car and not shout.  \nThe first animal that they saw was aroan antelope eating grass on the side of the road. It was like a sleek cow but the horns were very different, long and bent backwards and it looked like it was wearing a black mask. Soon they were seeing lots of antelopes .  \nNext James saw some ostriches in the distance . They were huge birds, bigger than a man . The male had black and white feathers while the two females had brown feathers. They were flapping their wings slowly as they walked away from the car . Ostriches cannot fly but they can run very fast and in South Africa they are kept and ridden and raced like horses . The guide told the driver not to try and get any closer as they are very shy.  \nWhen the car got near to a water hole the guide said to drive very slowly and carefully. James was excited to see two giraffes drinking. They spread their legs wide to reach their long necks into the water .  \nAlso at the water hole were some crowned-cranes . Beautiful, big birds that gracefully flew away when the car arrived. James hoped he would see them again .  \nThen the guide directed the car to a small wooded area . Here James could see lots of monkeys playing by the side of a shallow water hole . They were running and jumping and hitting each other like school children just let out of school. The guide said these were patas monkeys .
