\nNATIONALCentslay 16,1956REVIEW \nA WEEKLY JOURNAL OF OPINION \nHiss at Princeton \nTWO REPORTS \n“Moral Re-Armament”—Coexistence Through Apology \nMONTGOMERY M.GREEN \nPoland:Eternal and Temporary \nE.v.KUEHNELT-LEDDIHN \nArticles and Reviews by ······SAMM.JONESJAMES BURNHAM·C.DICKERMAN WILLLIAMS·RUSSELL KIRKWILLIAM HENRY CHAMBERLIN·F.A.VOIGT·RIVILO OLIVER \n(Mr。Jones is now making an extensive surveyof the pre-election scene in the variousstates. His special reports will appear inthis space from time to time.——THE EDITORS) \nAustin,Texas \nThere's a big row in the Big State.Fromthe Orange River to the Sierra Blanca Moun-tains you can hear the fighting words:\"You're a ____ Conservative,\"and,\"You'rea ___Liberal!”And nobody's smilin' \nThese epithets are a little confusing atfirst to non-Texans.It's all a matter ofdefinition, however, and in these days ofmeaningless political labels,a paradoxhere and there can scarcely hurt. \nTo define the terms in the simplest syno-nyms,a Texas Conservative is a radical anda Texas Liberal is a conformist. To makeit even more clear, the Liberals bow to theconventional orthodoxy while the Conserva-tives defy it.Further to illuminate thenow clarified picture, the Liberals submitto established rule while the Conservativeswalk out. \nWhen you understand all this, the bigfight is easy to follow, even if it is hardto tell who is winning. There is,in fact, only one other minor complication.Boththe Liberals and the Conservatives are onthe same team. They are--one and all--members of the Democratic Party of Texas. \nThe Principle at Issue \nThe divisive issue,as you will haveguessed by now,is Liberalism versus Con-servatism。A recent editorial in the DallasMorning News provides a bill of particulars: \n\"The 1956 battle for control of the Texasdelegation to the National Democratic Con-vention is pretty much a repetition of the1952 conflict. \n\"The issue is not whether Lyndon Johnsonshall be supported for the presidentialnomination but whether the \"yellow-dog\"principle shall prevail. \n\"Johnson and Sam Rayburn make no bonesabout it.They want to bind the delegationto vote for the nominee of the convention, whoever he might be.It could be Stevensonor Kefauver or Harriman or Humphrey or evenWalter Reuther. It won't be Lyndon Johnsonor Harry Byrd or Walter George or RichardRussell. \nfrom WASHINGTON straight \nA NEWSLETTERSAM M.JONES \n\"The line-up has changed somewhat from1952.Rayburn and Johnson have come downfrom Washington to take charge of the lib-erals.Government from the top down!Laborleaders have come out in the open.Someconservatives have misfigured the per-centages and changed sides. \n\"Yet the battle still is between the con-servatives and the liberals. The formerwould preserve States'rights, free enter-prise and the freedom of an American citi-zen to work at any job he can get.The latterwould further curtail States'rights,sub-stitute socialism for free enterprise androb free workers of their independence. \n\"Those who support the liberal side inthis conflict commit themselves,in ad-vance,to take whatever dose the nationalconvention may order. It may be prescribedby the extreme left-wing element.\" \nShivers--Non-Conformist \nForbearing to belabor the obvious, theNews found no reason to recall to its in-formed readership that Governor Allen Shiv-ers heads the Conservative faction,or thatit was under his leadership that the con-servatives bolted the Democratic ticket in1952 to support Eisenhower.Today the Gov-ernor leads the non-conformist vanguard, although he is not a candidate for publicoffice. He is a candidate for delegate tothe Democratic National Convention, and hisslate is opposed by that of Senator LyndonJohnson, who is supported by that othergreat conformist,Speaker Sam Rayburn.Sen-ator Johnson is also a \"favorite son\"can-didate for the Democratic Presidentialnomination. \nIn the opinion of the \"heretical\"Mr.Shivers,Mr。Johnson's chances for the Pres-idential nomination aren't worth an ounceof horsefea","cbCaif8ZJ2kEAT8l","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaif8ZJ2kEAT8l","pdf",2165457,24,"English","#
