This helps prevent contamination of water supplies and the breeding of flies and rats which may spread diseases to people in the community. Also a rubbish pit reduces unpleasant smells and removes household waste from sight.  \nSort your household rubbish carefully before putting any of it in a rubbish pit. Organic materials, such as vegetable peelings, should be used to make compost (see the Shell Book How to Make and Use Compost for tips on how to do that) . It maybe possible to reuse or recycle other types of household rubbish too.  \nAvoid putting batteries and other toxic waste in a rubbish pit as these will contaminate the soil and water sources.  \nCAUTION!  \nTake care when handling waste to avoid cuts from any sharp-edged items.  \nCleanliness is important to prevent the spread of disease. Wash your hands after handling household waste, especially before preparing and eating food.  \nA typical rubbish pit would be the size of two or three doors. This size of rubbish pit will last for about five years for an average family. For a larger household, the rubbish pit may need to be bigger.  \nSelecting a site  \nConsider the following factors:  \nDistance  \nThe rubbish pit should be far enough-at least 30m – from any wells or streams to protect water sources from contamination.
