For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the master of mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day. so that he may never truly die. \nYET EVEN IN his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon‐infested miasma of the warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperors will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst His soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio‐engineered super‐warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever‐vigilant Inquisition and the tech‐priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever‐present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants ‐ and worse. \nTo BE A man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruellest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re‐learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods. \nGav Thorpe «The Last Chancers» \nAUTHORS INTRODUCTION \nʹIf you steal from one author itʹs plagiarism if you steal from many itʹs research. ʹ \n‐ Wilson Mizner \nSO, AN AUTHOR'S intro for the omnibus edition, eh? Never one to shirk the task of talking about my writing and waxing lyrical on just how much thought needs to go into seemingly mindless violence, here is the Complete and Utter History of the Last Chancers. Bear with me, it goes on for a bit… \nI make no great claims of originality concerning the Last Chancers. In fact, their creation and development can be credited to many people. Anyway, let's do this properly and start at the beginning. \nYears ago, when I were but a youthful assistant games developer for Games Workshop, we were working on the Codex: Imperial Guard supplement for the Warhammer 40,000 game. Another assistant games developer, Ian Pickstock, and I were tasked with creating a ''special character'' -a famous (or infamous) named individual. \nWe came up with the idea of a famous squad, rather than a single person, based on the special forces ''men-on-a-mission'' platoon as seen in many action movies. So Major Schaeffer (the real name of Arnie's character in Predator) was created, along with a squad of ultra-tough hombres with their specialist skills and weaponry. \nThis was passed on to Rick Priestley, the main author of the codex, who is from a different movie-going generation to Ian and myself, and thus moved the squad into a frame of reference he found more familiar-the Dirty Dozen. Schaeffer was promoted toa colonel, and the squad became members of the 13th Penal Legion. \nNow, penal legions were real-both the Germans and Soviets made use of them during World War II, mainly for mine clearance and other such unenviable jobs. In the early iterations ofthe Warhammer 40,000 universe, through the Rogue Trader game, penal legions had been established as part of the Imperial Guard. However, this being the unforgiving Imperium of Man, these penal legions were human bombs, fitted with explosive collars to ensure discipline or, at a pinch, blow up the enemy! Rick wanted to move the penal legions into a slightly more heroic light for this version of t","cbCaib5F5YaQGohZ","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaib5F5YaQGohZ","pdf",3182481,266,"English","# Authors Introduction\n## Setting and premise of the 41st millennium\n## Origins of the Last Chancers concept\n## Penal legions and the shift to a heroic frame\n## Publication and early short-story development","[{\"question\":\"What is the 41st millennium setting described in the introduction?\",\"answer\":\"The text depicts a grim dark universe where the Emperor is sustained by the Golden Throne, fleets cross the warp by the Astronomican, and war is constant across countless worlds.\"},{\"question\":\"How did the Last Chancers concept originate?\",\"answer\":\"It began during work on a Codex: Imperial Guard supplement, where developers created a “special character” idea and evolved it into a famous squad rather than a single individual.\"},{\"question\":\"What role did penal legions play in shaping the Last Chancers?\",\"answer\":\"Penal legions were originally part of the Imperial Guard, described as dangerous human bombs; the author’s team reframed their purpose into a more heroic version, leading to the Last Chancers.\"}]","WARHAMMER 40,000 NOVELS - THE LAST CHANCERS - OMNIBUS | PDF",1791860590,410]
