I havebeen offered the melancholy honour of writing thisintroduction to what will be the last volume of hispoems.Michael Walsh was a writer who based allthat he did upon his love for the Catholic Faith andIreland. \nIt is not, however, merely as a good man that Iwrite of him here but as a good poet. The two thingsare by no means synonymous, though one must addthat even those poets whose histories have been marredwith faults and weaknesses have produced theirpoetry by virtue of the valour and vigour in them.Inthis case, fortunately,no qualifications are necessary.Michael Walsh was all of a piece. \n、He had previously published three other books,\"Brown Earth and Green,\"\"Red on the Holly,\"and\"The Heart Remembers Morning.\"A gradualdevelopment is,indeed, apparent in them, but fromthe beginning his own characteristic note was struck.I think we may say that\"Walls in the Grass\"contains his most mature and sensitive work. \nAll poets largely draw upon the memories ofchildhood and often do so more freely as they growolder. Thus in the title poem of this collection wefind the poet recalling his Lost Home with anexquisite tenderness: \n\"The garden hedge that onceEncircled all my youthAnd spread its leaves aboveThe morning of the world.\" \nThere is something of John Clare here,as in: \n\"All that remembered glowAnd music of the dawn.\" \nBut it is only an accidental resemblance, and notdue to any imitation. If there is any one poet whosevision seems to have some kinship with Walsh's thatpoet is Wordsworth, though again there are importantdifferences, and again there is no imitation eventhough there is probably some assimilation. We geta touch of this in that fine narrative poem,\"TheShepherd.\"Yet how completely Michael Walsh washimself,is apparent in the feeling and the movementof\"Autumn Calm\": \n\"The sun grows oldA tenderness of lightOn green late grassAnd quiet miles of woodsChanging to brown.Upon the golden treesThe apples in the sunAwait the Fall. \nThe year is an ageing womanIn coloured shawls \nAnd with a sweet grave faceSitting in meditation.\" \nThere is a perfect simplicity there that we couldalmost call naive, were it not that he is never so naiveas he seems to be.A suggestion of subtlety about tospring up from the grass,of a symbolism about to fallfrom the skies is not far away. And,of course, thereis the heroic note under all the gentleness, the thingblazing out in three lines of“Patricius on Tara”: \n\"There anger waited on a royal throne \nAnd all around ten thousand flashing spearsMirrored the morning.\" \nIn this book there is little concession to modernity,at least certainly not to that kind of modernity whichcloaks its emptiness in incomprehensibility. Now andthen a very stern critic, mindful of the fashions of theday, might object to an occasional archaism orinversion. But these are of the sli","cbCaikkVKFb5b09q","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaikkVKFb5b09q","pdf",2104177,52,"English","# CONTENTS\n## WALLIS IN THE GRASS\n## THE BURIED TAI,ENT\n## MERE UNCONQUERABLE GRASS\n## ST.
