A contrasting version shifts from playful misdirection toward sharper subtext, employing an overtly sleazy character to prevent readers from ignoring the underlying “counsel.” The writing emphasizes punchy, brief tone effects and classroom-style revision notes.","Dear Professor Wepler,  \nA while ago, I turned in my Tone essay,“The Enron Guys Deserve A Second Chance.” Somehow I believed that this piece was funny enough to turn in. I also optimistically believed that my well of jokes regarding predator apologists was deep enough to spawn a second essay. After brainstorming things like,“After Predators Canceled, ALL ART GONE!!!!” and,“Louis C.K. Apologizes For All The Assaults He Did……WHEN HE WAS A BABY?!” I came to the conclusion that my well was, if not shallow, contaminated. My Enron guys piece was also not particularly biting, as, although it was about predator apologists, I found it mostly funny because it was about the Enron guys. I got so nervous about trying to think of more jokes for that concept that instead I did not think about it at all, and now it is nighttime, and I have one thousand assignments due in the next seventeen hours, and I hate the Enron guys. Thus, I am delivering you a fresh, new concept completely divorced from my original Tone piece.  \nThe audience for these new pieces is a McSweeney’s or Reductress-type audience. The new concept is roasting the idea of people saying that they or others are “not like other girls” as a compliment, i.e. insinuating that most girls are terrible. For the “lighter”piece, I chose to go for a misdirect (kind of), or at least an absurd twist: the reason the girl isn’t like other girls is because of something silly. I chose to have the framing situation be the narrator trying to ingratiate herself to a guy, because that’s typically when girls say this kind of stuff (crossing the picket line, so to speak) . For the more intense piece, I chose to go less absurd and more “making the subtext the actual text.”  \nRather than doing two different formats to switch up the tone, I chose to do the same format with different content in order to highlight the direct effect of absurdity ontone.“Gold Leaf Ass” is a light piece because it twists a familiar concept (“not like other girls”) into a character totally divorced from reality, a character that we can laugh at without confronting any hard truths about ourselves. (However, the silliness of the piece reminds us that the base concept is silly.) In contrast,“Sleep With Me” twists the concept back on itself and reminds us not only of the silliness of the concept but of the harmful root of the concept. By having an overtly sleazy character, the audience is unable to escape the “counsel” of the piece – it’s impossible to overlook. I decided to go super  \novert with “Sleep With Me” to hammer home the tone unit – it’s not really my taste (feels a little preachy/McSweeney’s), but it’s a learning opportunity!  \nAs these concepts are pretty simple and not explicitly character-driven, the pieces are pretty brief. They don’t want to be drawn out for so long; this is more like a punchy Reductress piece in style than a longer humorous exploration.  \nNot sure if the reflexiveness/loop in the Gold Leaf Ass piece is reading – let me know.  \nI’m sure these pieces could be tighter and will take another look at them after the semester is formally over, but as my mother says,“Don’t let the perfect get in the way of the good!”(Don’t let the perfect get in the way of the finished!)  \nAnother headline I was toying with: “Some Guys Just Want Sex.
