this issue goes to press a group ofpeacemakers are on a pilgrimage acros8Cuba.Printed below is an excerpt froma letter explaining their intentions—Eds.Note.] \nBy MATT VOGEL \nOn November 7,2005,The Los AngelesTimes reported that All Saints EpiscopelChurch in Pasadena.CA had been warned bythe Internal Revenue Service (IRS)that itstax-exempt status was in danger because ofan anti war sermon given by Rev.George ERegas, the former rector of the church.Thesermon was delivered in 2004,shortly beforethe presidential election and imagined something ofa conversation between Jesus,JohnKerry and George Bush, harshly criticizingPresident Bush for the war in Iraq.It included the suggestion that Jesus would neverhave supported the war. \nThen the King will say to those an Hisright,Come, yow who are blessed by My FatherInherit the kingdom prepared for yow from thefowndation of the word. For I was hngry andyow gave Me food,I weas thirsty and yow gaveMe drink,a stranger and yow welcomed Me,naked and yow clothed Me,ill and yow cared forMe,in prisowand you visited Me.\" \nMatthew 25:34-36 \nOn December 5th,a group of people offaith from the UnitedStates willembark onan eleven-day journey to the US-runGuantanatno Bay detention facility. We willarrive in Santiago.Cuba to begin a five-day,roughly 77-mile solemn walk to theGuantanamo base, where we hope to per-form the Corporal Work of Mercy of visitingthe prisoners. \nIn a political climate in which religion isplaying an increasingly important role, especially amongst conservatives, such an investigation smacks of selectivity. Why,whennumerous churches invite politicians andgenerals to speak from the pulpit during religious services or when tax-exempt religiousorganizations produce voter guides thatallbut link salvation to a particular slate of candidates, was All Saints Church singled out?It seems odd that a sermon that did notendorse any particular candidate and thatcame from a church and a priest who hadattacked previous wars, wars of bothRepublican and Democratic administrations, should raise the ire of the IRS. \nWe hope to interview prisoners about tor-ture claims and hunger strikes at the base.We also seek to initiate a credible, objectiveand fair assessment of the situation of thedetainees. We have lawyers and doctors oncall to join us,should we be allowed in.Weplan to stay until December 15th to maintaina vigil outside the gates of the base, having apresence over International Human RightsDay on December 10th. \nBut,this episode begs amuch deeper question:why do the churches hold so firmly ontotheir taxexempt status? After all,as we see(contiewed on page 3) \nGuadiam et Spes(The Vatican I docu-ment.\"On the Church in the ModernWorld\")decries torture and the other abuses reported to be practiced at Guantánamoas \"criminal:they poison civilization;andthey debase the perpetrators more than thevictims and militate against the honor ofthe Creator.\"(27)Pope John Paul II remind-ed us that practices such as these are \"incapable of being ordered'to God\"and therefore are \"intrinsically evil.\"He explainedthat,\"circumstances or intentions can nevertransform an act
