for the Day when the Spirit Will Make \nUs One \nBy Thomas Rosica,CSB \nDear Friends in Christ, \nin the area of interreligious dialogue,we must never forgetthe historical background of the century which gave birthto these great movements in the Church and in the world ina century which began with a belief in progress and turnedout to be one of the darkest and bloodiest centuries in thehistory of humankind, with two world wars, many localwars, civil wars and ethnic conflicts, two humanity-despis-ing totalitarian systems, concentration camps and gulags, genocides, expulsions and waves of refugees. We mustremember the roots from which our movements blossomed.Out of the utter despair of those years,a bright light shat-tered the darkness:the ecumenical movement. After centu-ries of Christian fragmentation,a counter movement quietlybegan as churches became painfully aware that such a sit-uation contradicted Jesus Christ's will, and was a sin and ascandal. The separation of the Churches-over 1500 yearsago with the Ancient Oriental Churches, over 1000 yearsago with the Orthodox Churches, and now 500+years agowith reformed Christianity had seriously compromised thecredibility of the Christian message. \nI \nt is an honor and privilege for me to be among youthis evening and offer some words of deep apprecia-tion and encouragement for the vital work you do forthe Church and the churches. From my earliest days information for religious life and priestly ministry,I havebeen deeply marked by the Ecumenical Movement andhave been educated and inspired by not only outstandingCatholic scholars and teachers, but by professors, teachersand leaders of other Christian Churches. My theologicalformation at the Toronto School of Theology from 1982-1985 was greatly influence by the Ecumenical spirit andvibrant collaboration of the colleges that form one of theworld’s great, theological consortium.I cherish the memo-ries of my homiletics courses at Knox Presbyterian College;the Reformation History courses at the United Church ofCanada's Emmanuel College and biblical languages andexegesis courses at the Anglican Communion's Trinity andWycliffe Colleges.I was blessed to do my Field Educationat the Montreal Centre for Ecumenism in 1984 under thewise guidance and mentorship of Paulist Father ThomasRyan.I have also had the great privilege of working veryclosely with the Jewish and Islamic communities in theMiddle East and in Canada along the journey. My 14 yearsof work on the National Christian Jewish Consultation inCanada and the Middle East Working Group, representingthe Canadian Bishops, have left some indelible marks onmy mind, heart and priestly ministry \ncontinued on page 2 \nApriest in the Congregation ofSt.Basil,Fr.Thomas
