considered the national "Schrei"number
one.The Vienna State Opera is not what
an opera house means to other cities. It
is the Golden Gate bridge, the pyramids
of Egypt,and the Eiffel tower;something
people have to see on the first day of
their arrival in Vienna.The performances
are filled by people who come by the
hundreds,partly not knowing what is
being performed,because they order their
tickets from abroad months in advance.
Recognizing the importance of the
opera to every Austrian,the government
must maintain its highest standards.No
government would ever cut the subsidy
to the opera, since it would be its last day
in power.
The Vienna State Opera performs on
two stages, both together give 600 perfor-
mances a year, which the Austrian gov-
ernment subsidizes by $200,000 a night.
It would never reduce the subsidy be-
cause it feels opera is important for the
welfare ofthe people,human happiness,
mental well-being,and for keeping up
with the tradition of the country.
Opera's History
Opera has changed totally in my life-
time.When I was a child,the meaning of
opera to us was different than today. It
was entirely focused on the new works,
and did not mean a performance of"Car-
men,"or "La traviata."The Vienna State
Opera was the conversation center for
discussions on the new works of its gen-
eral manager,Richard Strauss.Nobody
was conservative but regarded opera as
an educational enterprise to modern mu-
sic.
Our enthusiasm for Richard Strauss
and Alban Berg was also a sign of"inside
illness."As we did not realize the great-
ness of Mozart,we had to be educated
to the past.At that time, there was a con-
stant market for new works. Most of
them did not survive, and opera repertory
dwindled to 40 works.
During the history of opera,about
50,000 works have been written in the
past 400 years;of those experiments,
Continued
