\nYou may have noticed by the title that my talk to-day will go beyond the boundaries of this conference'sprime concern-the decade immediately ahead.Itwill.But in doing so I hope to expand the dimensionin a manner that enhances the importance of the nextten years-rather than diminishes it.  \nIn just 33 years we'll turn the corner into the 21stCentury.What will it be like,American agriculturein the Year 2000?  \nNo one really knows,of course.There are too manyintangibles...too many uncertainties.But predictionsare being made,and perhaps we should examine them.  \nMan's fascination with Tomorrow is as oldas manhimself.  \nFrom the dawn of his imagination,he has tried topeer behind the“curtain's magic fold”to where BretHarte said‘'the glowing future lies unrolled.\"  \nAs I stand here-about to tell this group what mayor may not happen in their own chosen field-I’mreminded of the story of the Army sergeant who hadmade an excellent reputation lecturing to enlisted menon a certain subject.His captain called him in,com-plimented him,and saidhe hadbeen chosen to lectureto a special group.  \nHe has speculated about the future for profit,foramusement,out of simple curiosity...and sometimesfor reasons bigger than himself.  \nAnd sometimes,he has,indeed,looked into To-morrow.  \nTennyson said he\"dipt into the future,faras humaneye could see\"andsaw the Vision of the world,andall the wonder that would be.\"  \nThe sergeant walked into the lecture room andgazed out over the biggest collection of brass hats hehad ever seengathered in one place.Every man in theroom outranked him.  \nTennyson was a romantic.A mɔre pragmatic poetturned his inner eye upon Tomorrow and declaredthat the future has never been...that it remains forman to make it.  \nEmbarrassed,he tried to think of a modest be-ginning.‘‘There are thousands of men in the Armywho know more about this subject than I do,\"hebegan.Then,realizing he was destroying his reputa-tion as an expert,he blurted out,'‘But I don't seeany of them in this room!\"  \nThe towers of Tomorrow,he said,are built uponthe foundations of Today.  \nWe’re gathered here in Tulsa to try to turn back
