\n1969 \nVisuals are a Language \nPHOTOGRAPHYAND THEINNERCITY \nThe 1968 summer venture known as50-Cities Project resulted from coop-eration between former Vice-Presi-dent Humphrey's Council on YouthOpportunity and the National Associ-ation of Photographic Manufacturers.Kodak has participated in over 50photo programs in 16 states. Many ofthese programs were so successfulthat they were continued during the1968-69 school year. These pagesshow some of the subjects that inter-ested the youngsters and some oftheir activities in photography. \nMajor goals of the 50-Cities Projectinvolved helping the youngsters toachievegreater self-awareness,to ob-tain a broader understanding of theirenvironment, and to become moreaware of career opportunities in thephotographic field. If you would liketo start a program like this in your area,we have some ideas that will help.Forfurtherinformation write tol.L.Jordan,Education Specialist,Department624,Eastman Kodak Company.Rochester.New York 14650. \nDuring the summer of 1968,TheStonegate School and Camp,Inc.,ofDurham,Connecticut, set up a pho-tography program for its summercampers. The results of the programare particularly interesting, for thecampers were mentally retarded chil-dren and young adults. The programwas an attempt to determine some ofthe capabilities of the retardates.Since therehad been a general under-estimation of the children's capabil-ities,we were both surprised andpleased that they took such an activeinterest in photography. \n# THEPHOTOGRAPHYPROGRAM OF\n\nTHE STONEGATESCHOOLAND CAMP,INC. \nBy Ron Schwartz,Director of Photography,The Stonegate Camp \nThe photography project had anexperimental group of 20 retardates.Choices for the experimental groupwere based on three criteria:potentialof each individual, achievement as in-dicated by pictures they took during apreliminary session in July, and gen-eral behavior. The camera proved tobe an excellent way of getting almostall of the children to cooperate withus in just about any camp activity. \nAtthe end ofthe summer, each childmade his own photo album. Each ofthe 20 children in the experimentalgroup was interviewed.I asked themto discuss the pictures they had taken.Replies varied greatly. Some childrenwere hesitant to talk about their pic-tures at first;but the majority of thechildren had anxiously awaited the ar-rival of the pictures and were all tooeager to discuss them freely. \nTen-year-old Steven Douglas is amildly retarded,hypoactive,non-verbal child who seemingly did notunderstand the use and function of acamera. In progress reports, his coun- \nselors stated.'\"We don't believe thathe has any idea of the purpose oroperation of the camera.Although hehas the ability to do so...Stevenneeded constant prodding to get himto use the camera.\"Yet,when I re-viewed his pictures with him,I noticedthat the boy had an unusual eye forcomposition. His counselors statedthat he had taken all of his picturesOne picture, entitled \"Miss Mary,\"won a blue ribbon and first prize atthe Cheshire County Fair,Cheshire,Connecticut.Apparently, his successwas not mere coincidence. He pro-duced many fine photographs andsurprised us all. \nStonegate is an institution whichwelcomes the young retardate as anindividual.I sincerely feel that thisphotography program is in accordwith the institution's purpose. It offersthe children a new and exciting man-ner of self-expression.As trite as theabove statement may seem,it remainsan indisputable fact that the childrenshot pictures of those things whichcaught their eyes and sparked theirimaginations.Although there is nosuch thing as a \"perfect experiment.\"I feel that the photography program ofThe Stonegate School and Camp wasabout as close to one as possible be-cause everyone benefited from it.Butmost important,we gave the retar-dates a chance to experiment.Formany of them it was the first time intheir lives that they had ever had
