The clap of his steps on the pavement was the only sound he heard. No breeze whispered in his ear, the dogs had long silenced their barking; not a trace of a person anywhere, the city seemed to have died under a spell only a moment ago . . . He suddenly flinched.“A shimmering hypnotic calm has so sweetly settled in my soul! What detachment and fearlessness! Well———isn’t this just the mood I needed, the one I’ve been waiting so long to strike? Yes—no doubt! Such a light, as if purposely streaming down on me from the firmament, will not shine in me a second time . . . No more dithering! Now I’ll show my mettle, if I’m a milksop or a man! Come what may!”  \nHe turned at once into a backstreet, alarmed and mystified by how quickly and easily he had made the decision, something previously unimaginable for him. Stars glittered in gaps in the clouds as if they meant to be a good omen and assist him. He checked his pockets once more for all the necessary items. He had them.  \nFor weeks he had walked around with these objects in his pockets, through the streets each night, indecisive, waiting for the right mood to spark him into action: to murder and rob an old, erudite, very ill man, his friend despite their vast difference in age, in whose apartment he had spent many a night immersed in philosophical discussion.  \nHe stood before the familiar white apartment house. He looked up, still not registering any fear whatsoever. The windows of the third floor were dark. “He’s not reading, he’s asleep! Excellent! Not a soul on the street – now’s the time!” And he quietly, gently opened the front door with the key he had prepared, entered, and locked it again behind him. It was black inside, absolutely silent like outside. But – – – his heart began to thump darkly ...  \nHe slipped on a mask, switched on the electric flashlight under his cloak and put it in its case, then slowly climbed the stairs along the carpet. If anyone in the house were to awaken, they would not be able to tell the rustle of his steps from the rustle of a mouse gnawing on soft bread. Yet –  \nhis heart was now beating more audibly.“Why is it pounding? I still feel no fear at all! Odd ... or does it already sense what hasn’t yet reached my brain? Hurry before that gets tainted as well!”  \nHe stood on the third floor and took out a skeleton key. “Usually he doesn’t leave the key in the lock inside, but if it’s there now, I’ll have toslink away empty-handed. I’m not exactly conversant with the burglar ’s trade ... No key inside – ah, too bad! What the hell did I just say? Aha – now fear has made it to my brain. But before it gets any worse the whole thing will be done and over.– It’s all going to plan, success is at hand!”  \nHe opened the door with minimal creaking, went in, and shut it again with a click of the handle.“Victory is nearly mine, the old man never locks his other doors ... And what could be easier than to bash in a sleeping skull with a hammer? How seductive! This will be the first spectacular act of my life, ha!” His heart skipped a beat and suddenly stopped pounding, and adrenaline surged through his veins. He quickly entered the first room and went up to the bedroom door.– He stood a minute, listening.
