Windes, Mr . Leutzinger, Mr . Gant \nLesson: April 15, 2020 \nObjective/Learning Target: \nStudents will practice using an architect’s scale on \narchitectural plans \n\n| | | |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| | | Bell Ringer: |\n| | | |\n\nSometimes there isn’t a proper architect’s scale nearby when needed. Not to worry, a regular ruler can be used in a pinch. Discuss in your notebooks the relationship between an architect’s scale and a standard ruler. For how many different architectural scales can the standard ruler be used? \n\n| | | |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| | | Let’s get started: |\n| | | |\n\nAn architect’s scale is a tool that allows designers to create large scale projects such as buildings and bridges at a reduced size. A typical scale is triangular in shape and contain as many as 12 different scales on it. \nReview this video on how to read the architect’s scale from Bob: \n[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrbjWgyZlFc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrbjWgyZlFc) \n\n| | | |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| | | Practice: |\n| | | |\n\nPrint this page at 100% scale. Use your printed scales to measure the lines using the proper scale (if you do not have an architect’s scale handy) . \n| | | |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| | | Practice: |\n| | | |\n\nUsing the plan to the right, and the printed scales, complete the following tasks: \n❏ Determine the appropriate scale for the drawing using the printed scales. \n❏ Calculate the approximate square footage of the home. \n❏ Record the interior dimensions of the great room, each bedroom, and the combined kitchen. \n❏ List the overall dimensions of the house (longest dimension in each direction) \n| | | |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| | | Check your work: |\n| | | |\n\nAnswers** for measurements: \n1. The most appropriate scale for the plan represented on the previous page is ⅛”=1’-0” \n2. Square footage is approximately 940 sf \n3. Room dimensions are approximately: \na . Great Room 13’ x 20’ \nb. Master 12’ x 11’-4” \nc . Bedroom 10’ x 11’-4” \nd. Kitchen/Dining 18’ x 9’ \n4. Overall dimensions of the house are 35’x32’ \nCommon Mistakes: \n❏ Make sure you are reading from the correct end. Depending on the scale you are using you could either read from right to left or left to right. \n❏ Make sure you are using the correct numbers on the scale. \n❏ The larger the scale the more precise your measurements need to be (i.e. ⅛” scale measures to the nearest 2” and 1” scale measures to the nearest ¼”) . \n**Due to the nature of printer discrepancies and interpretations of the printed scales, answers, answers are approximate. \n\n| | | |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| | | Additional Resources: |\n| | | |\n\nHow to read the architect’s scale: \n[https://akloc.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/architectural-scale.pdf](https://akloc.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/architectural-scale.pdf)[ ](https://akloc.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/architectural-scale.pdf)[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aytX_QAMzbk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aytX_QAMzbk) \n[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQY7fUmtjPw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQY7fUmtjPw)","cbCaikXBoLBvah6I","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaikXBoLBvah6I","pdf",570479,"English","# Objective/Learning Target\n# Bell Ringer\n# Let’s get started\n# Practice\n# Check your work\n## Common Mistakes\n# Additional Resources","[{\"question\":\"What is the learning objective for this lesson?\",\"answer\":\"Students will practice using an architect’s scale on architectural plans and apply it to measure and estimate key aspects of a drawing.\"},{\"question\":\"How can a student measure when an architect’s scale is not available?\",\"answer\":\"Use a regular ruler in a pinch, and compare the relationship between an architect’s scale and a standard ruler; for practice, print the page at 100% scale and use the printed scales.\"},{\"question\":\"What are the sample results students should check against?\",\"answer\":\"The most appropriate scale is ⅛”=1’-0”, estimated square footage is about 940 sf, room dimensions include a great room of about 13’x20’ and a kitchen/dining area of about 18’x9’, and overall house dimensions are about 35’x32’.\"}]","Virtual Learning - Architect’s Scale - Lesson April 15, 2020 | PDF"]
