C.Southam \nThe Critical Heritage series collects together a large body of criticism on major figures in literature. Each volume presents the contemporary responses to a particular writer, enabling the student to follow the formation of critical attitudes to the writer’s work and its place within a literary tradition. \nThe carefully selected sources range from landmark essays in the history of criticism to fragments of contemporary opinion and little published documentary material, such as letters and diaries. \nSignificant pieces of criticism from later periods are also included in order to demonstrate fluctuations in reputation following the writer’s death. \nVIRGINIA WOOLF \nTHE CRITICAL HERITAGE \nEdited by \nROBIN MAJUMDAR & ALLEN MCLAURIN \nLondon and New York \nFirst published in 1975 \nRoutledge is an imprint of the Taylor & Francis Group. \nThis edition published in the Taylor & Francis e-Library, 2003. \nCompilation, introduction, notes and index © 1975 Robin Majumdar & Allen McLaurin \nAll rights reserved. On one side we learn a great deal about the state of criticism at large and in particular about the development of critical attitudes towards a single writer; at the same time, through private comments in letters, journals or marginalia, we gain an insight upon the tastes and literary thought of individual readers of the period. Evidence of this kind helps us to understand the writer’s historical situation, the nature of his immediate reading-public, and his response to these pressures. \nThe separate volumes in the Critical Heritage Series present a record of this early criticism. Clearly, for many of the highly productive and lengthily reviewed nineteenth- and twentieth-century writers, there exists an enormous body of material; and in these cases the volume editors have made a selection of the most important views, significant for their intrinsic critical worth or for their representative quality—perhaps even registering incomprehension! \nFor earlier writers, notably pre-eighteenth century, the materials are much scarcer and the historical period has been extended, sometimes far beyond the writer’s lifetime, in order to show the inception and growth of critical views which were initially slow to appear. \nIn each volume the documents are headed by an Introduction, discussing the material assembled and relating the early stages of the author’s reception to what we have come to identify as the critical tradition. The volumes will make available much material which would otherwise be difficult of access and it is hoped that the modern reader will be thereby helped towards an informed understanding of the ways in which literature has been read and judged. \nB.C.S. \nContents \nACKNOWLEDGMENTS page xv INTRODUCTION 1 \nNOTE ON THE TEXT 48 \nThe Voyage Out (1915) \n1 Unsigned review in Times Literary Supplement, April 1915 49 \n2 Unsigned review in Observer, April 1915 50 \n3 Unsigned review in Morning Post, April 1915 51 \n4 E.M.FORSTER, review in Daily News and Leader, \nApril 1915 52 \n5 GERALD GOULD, review in New Statesman, April 1915 55 \n6 A.N.M., review in Manchester Guardian, April 1915 57 \n7 Unsigned review in Athenaeum, May 1915 59 \n8 Unsigned review in Nation, May 1915 60 \n9 W.H.HUDSON, l","cbCairl0Qu9woGC2","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCairl0Qu9woGC2","pdf",1472142,484,"English","# General Editor’s Preface\n# Contents\n## The Voyage Out (1915)\n## ‘Kew Gardens’ (1919)\n## Night and Day (1919)\n## Monday or Tuesday (1921)\n## Jacob’s Room (1922)","[{\"question\":\"What is the purpose of The Critical Heritage series in this volume?\",\"answer\":\"It gathers contemporary criticism and documents to help students trace how critical attitudes toward a specific writer formed and how the writer’s work fits within a literary tradition.\"},{\"question\":\"What kinds of materials are included for Woolf’s reception?\",\"answer\":\"The volume includes landmark essays, contemporary reviews, and also private commentary such as letters and diaries, plus later pieces showing changes in reputation after Woolf’s death.\"},{\"question\":\"How is the book’s contents organized?\",\"answer\":\"The contents list reception documents by Woolf works (e.g., The Voyage Out, ‘Kew Gardens’, Night and Day, Monday or Tuesday, Jacob’s Room) and enumerates items such as reviews and letters with their publication dates.\"}]","VIRGINIA WOOLF - THE CRITICAL HERITAGE - General Editor’s Preface & Contents | PDF",1789988118,745]
