very latest of the pictures is hopelessly out of dateand unrecognisable. This was the intention of the author, for Vintage London isof the past;it has disappeared altogether, swallowed long ago by the gaping gulletsof private property, big business and municipal ‘progress'.Readers may wonderwhy there are no illustrations of mediaeval London. The reason is that this book is meantto show where Vintage London can still be rediscovered;there was no need to illustratemediaeval London, whose life has gone for good and whose stone and timber remnantsare honoured in every guide-book with the inevitable antiquarian bias towards what isirreproachably ancient. No attempt has been made to describe the pictures in detail.Theyare, indeed,a book in themselves.Verbal description cannot deepen the tones, for example,of Gustave Dore's picture of the gloomier side of industrial London, when the artist himselfhas drawn it so well. But in the later sections of my text(Londoners should skip the firstthree sections)I have tried to give what can be read as complementary impressions inprose of certain periods in the history of the same city as that which is illustrated in thepictures,a city that is now, most of it,planets away. \nVintage London hardly extended beyond the county of London.Non-vintageLondon of to-day extends over most of England. The village community in the country isbreaking up and the local town has attracted the villagers with its cinemas and shops andcheap transport. The local town consists mainly of chain-stores which distribute free giftsin order to entice customers from the local tradesmen:the cinema supplies bi-weeklypropaganda for urban existences. The chain-stores and the cinema have their headquartersin London. The local town has become a small replica of London. The speculative builderis abetted by the contractor, who is abetted by the Building Society, which is abetted bythe Insurance Companies, which are abetted by the Banks;and these sinister agents havetheir central organisations in London. The growth of heavy transport on the roads wasa blessing to those light industries which needed quick delivery and which were situatedin remote parts of the industrial North. The focus for light industry shifted from the railwaysto the roads.Outside London the great trunk roads have become the factory sites of allthose industries which were not tied, for geological and economic reasons,to the provinceswhere they started. After the last war a Ribbon Development Act was passed in an attemptto stop industries from settling along trunk roads and stringing main thoroughfares, intended \nThe Cathedral City of London, dominated by Old St Paul's,once the largestcathedral in Europe.Drawn from the fields now covered by Clerkenwell. \nfor through traffic, with factories and small houses. All this Act succeeded in doing wasto pepper the country for miles round London with factories and houses spaced widerapart than necessary,so that now along the main roads from London there is hardly anyagricultural land to be found for twenty miles in any direction.Where a few fields andtrees survive between the trunk roads and away from the“zoned”areas, the gaps arefootworn, the grass is strewn with empty cartons and cigarette ends and the cows fix theirmelancholy eyes on streams of passing motor cars. \nThat huge area extending over
