Arising as a method of creating fabric from materials such as plant fibres and animal hair, the domestication of sheep yielded woollen yarn that could be knitted as well as woven into warm and comfortable fabrics. Through the Dark Ages and medieval times, knitting as a domestic skill continued (see page 136), right up to the Industrial Revolution when machines took over the mass production of both woven and knitted fabrics (see page 47) . Jane Austen mentions genteel ladies ‘netting purses’ in her novels, while George Eliot has Maggie knitting stockings in The Mill on the Floss , showing that knitting for practical purposes was already the main reason for the craft.  \nBy the early years of the twentieth century, knitting had become something that people did as a labour of love; homemakers knitted jumpers and cardigans to keep their families warm. During the World Wars and the Depression years, it was valued as a way of extending the scarce resources of the family and this is reflected in many of the patterns in this book, which mainly come from that era. Tricks to eke out a small budget, or make plain materials look like luxury goods are often referred to in the pages of the women’s magazines from which these patterns are taken. The Noni child’s cardigan on page 146 was designed to make ordinary wool look like luxury mohair; the Margaret jacket on page 54 was a substitute for an expensive silk blouse.  \nKnitting was a homely craft, and as women’s work moved out of the home it lost its popularity for a generation of women. It has only been in the past few decades that the skill has found a resurgence among  \nyounger people who are looking for a creative activity to occupy their leisure hours.  \nAlthough the craft has changed in many ways in the past hundred years, the basic skills are the same. If you know how to hold a pair of knitting needles, how to make a knit stitch and a purl stitch, you can knit just about anything.  \nHOW TO KNIT  \nIf you’ve never knitted before—or you learned long ago but have forgotten the basics—the best way to learn is to find a friend or relative who can teach you face to face. If that’s not possible, many yarn and craft stores offer lessons for small groups. Another alternative is to use the internet, where many experienced knitters have posted video tutorials showing you how to get started. Just type ‘learn to knit’ into the search box and follow the links down the rabbit hole until you find a teacher whose style suits you.
