This urgent need has led to the widespread use of communicative language teaching (CLT) because it is an innovative approach to developing students' communication skills. CLT strives to establish an environment where students can use language as in real life. In the case of Vietnam, the Ministry of Education and Training has new policies about implementing CLT into English teaching in order to improve the communication abilities of Vietnamese students. Public school students have not, however, achieved the same success in communication over the previous 20 years as those attending private English language centers. \nBy examining teachers' attitudes toward applying CLT to teach grammar, correct errors, and use pair-work/group-work activities, this qualitative research aimed to examine the reason for this difference. The study also investigated factors influencing the use of CLTin classrooms and difficulties that teacher participants faced while implementing CLT in these two contexts. Interviews and questionnaires were used with two English teachers in public schools and two in private English sectors. The findings indicated that the participating teachers from private centers and public schools had different attitudes towards using CLT in teaching grammar, correcting errors and pair work/group work in their classrooms. However, lack of knowledge about CLT and training programs, curriculum, workplace support, class size, students’ abilities and grammar-based testing and infrastructure makes implementing CLT difficult for public school teachers. Meanwhile, the greatest difficulties of private center teachers were the students' level of English ability and instructing students with low English ability. Participating teachers suggested possible solutions to help Vietnamese teachers cope with some of those problems: using more speaking tasks, adjusting teachers’ utterances to be suitable for low-level students, and setting appropriate goals for particular student groups. \nVIETNAMESE TEACHERS’ATTITUDESAND DIFFICULTIES TOWARDS CLT 4 \nKeywords: Communicative Language Teaching, large classes, grammar-based tests, curriculum, lack of training. \nVIETNAMESE TEACHERS’ATTITUDESAND DIFFICULTIES TOWARDS CLT 5 \nVietnamo anglų kalbos mokytojų požiūris ir sunkumai, susiję su komunikaciniu kalbų mokymo metodu valstybinėse mokyklose ir privačiuose anglų kalbos centruose \nSantrauka \nGlobalizacijos amžiuje anglų kalbos mokymasis tampa vis populiaresniu irsvarbesniu.
