VIENNAin the Biedermeier Era\n\n# VIENNAin the Biedermeier Era1815-1848\n\nEdited by Robert Waissenberger \n300 illustrations,80 in color \nA late-twentieth century revival of interestin the Biedermeier style is the occasion forthis new study of its origins. In 300 illustra-tions and eleven lively essays,a numberof eminent social and art historians exam-ine a fascinating era in the history of oneof Europe's most vibrant capitals.Follow-ing the French Revolution and the suc-ceeding Napoleonic Wars,Vienna duringthe mid-1800s was the center of turbulentchanges in politics, social structure, andthe fine and decorative arts. The middleclass assumed power and prominence, andits emerging tastes challenged the prevail-ing aristocratic styles of the old order. \nDuring this era,Gottfried Biedermeier,a humorous and popular fictional characterfrom the journal Fliegende Blaätter, cameto symbolize the new.values, giving hisname to the style that would become popu-lar among the nouveau riche throughoutEurope and England.Emphasis was on thedecorative arts—on graceful furniture, glass, clocks, and porcelain. In painting, genrescenes, portraits, and lyrical landscapes werein vogue, while in music,late-classicalmusicians Beethoven and Schubert delightedaudiences and the Viennese waltzes of JohannStrauss the Elder had their debut.Bieder-meier architecture which placed emphasison the comfortable aspects of home decorthat appealed to the middle class ratherthan on the exterior pomp favored by thearistocracy,is represented chiefly in thework of Josef Kornhäusel, the most repre-sentative of the era's architects. The newsocial order produced new forms of self-expression documented here in paintings, \n(continued on back flap) \n7 \nVIENNA1815-1848 \nVIENNAin
