These sessions will review the current state of the science in these areas and will cover evidence-based clinical considerations relevant to the care ofolder adults to help maintain independence, improve function, and enhance aging in place where possible. This is appropriate for health care professionals in all care areas. \nAlthough age-related hearing loss is well-characterized, concomitant vestibular decline is less understood. Age-related decline in vestibular function is a complex issue, but one with significant effects on safety, independence, and quality of life. A significant gap in Veteran healthcare exists regarding understanding, discussion, and management of vestibular dysfunction, even though vestibular dysfunction contributes to increased fall risk. This educational activity will summarize clinical and basic science evidence, review possible mechanisms, and support incorporation of routine balance assessment and timely referral into vestibular rehabilitation therapy. As a result, participants are expected to improve their ability to identify vestibular loss as a modifiable sensory impairment relevant to mobility and fall risk, strengthen interdisciplinary referral pathways, and enhance patient counseling and management. The current work seeks to increase knowledge of natural vestibular decline and modifiable factors in age-related vestibular decline. Clinicians in neurology, geriatrics, primary care, audiology and physical therapy may not perceive vestibular dysfunction as a modifiable factor inpatient care. Recent evidence suggests that although cellular changes in the vestibular periphery are permanent, disability associated with these cellular changes can be reduced. \nTarget Audience \nThe primary target audience for this activity consists of Certified Counselors, Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Physicians, Psychologists, Social Workers \nOutcome/Objectives \nAt the conclusion of this educational program, learners will be able to: \n1. describe the progression of age-related hearing loss and vestibular loss over early, middle, and late-adulthood; \n2. discuss the relationship between vestibular decline and impaired mobility; and \n3. explain the importance of early referral for vestibular testing and rehabilitative therapy to improve mobility, independence, and quality of life. \nCommercial Support \nThis activity did not receive commercial support. \nDisclosure Statement \nVeterans Health Administration must ensure balance, independence, objectivity, and scientific rigor in all of its individually sponsored or jointly sponsored educational activities. All prospective faculty and planning committee members participating in a Veterans Health Administration activity must disclose any relevant financial relationship or other relationship with: (a) the manufacturer(s) of any commercial product(s) and / or provider(s) of commercial services discussed in an educational presentation, and (b) any commercial supporters of the activity. All financial relationships include, but is not limited to, such things as personal receipt of grants or research support, employee or consultant status, stockholder, member of speakers’ bureau, within the prior 24 months.
