The first was in 1967, the second in 1972. Now it was 1979 and Jett could hear it blasting from a building to her left.  \n“Nights in white satin, never reaching the end,” she sang, wishing it true. The half-formed head under her left breast hummed along tonelessly.  \nMaybe the music would act like a lullaby and put it to sleep. She massaged the bulb of extra flesh, feeling the drool from the tiny mouth dampen her Tshirt. She patted it affectionately.  \n“Beauty I’ve always missed with these eyes before,” Jett continued softly as if singing a lullaby to her sister,“…just what the truth is, I can’t say anymore.”  \nThe idiot lips vibrated as if trying to hum, but the undeveloped voice box was mute in the twin.  \nJett sighed and bent to work, picking up a stone from someone’s yard. Breaking lights put out eyes of the undead world. When Jett threw a rock  \nand a street light blinked into darkness, she knew she’d killed it.  \nShe killed as many as fifty a night. An entire evil neighborhood put to black, trusted sentinels against the magical cold murdered as the vampires slept. The ones with their smooth, perfect bodies. Beautiful as nothing human ever was.  \nJett wished she could put out the sun and stamp out the stars for her Goddess, turning everything into the comfortable darkness suitable to the monkish anonymity she sought. That would be a great work, a supreme feat of faith. But it would take more than she—a little priestess—possessed.  \nNival was somewhere, only a block or two away. They always worked the same area of town together. Jett stalked street lamps, theoretically rattling the prayer wheel of enigma around, helping to maintain the sacred primal empty from which all things ultimately generated, shaken from sleep into the burning of birth. Nival broke into homes that betrayed their vampire occupants with glimmers through windows. It was as easy as someone reading a sultry vampire novel in bed—all about grace and scarlet, an excuse to keep light burning up the night. It might be the glowing dial of an alarm clock or a Jiminy Cricket nightlight. Or it might be the simple but poisoning fire at the tip of a cigarette that singed the otherwise holy dark.
