Please delete these notes before printing  \nVersatile Vetiver A Grass of Many Virtues  \nIntroduction  \nVetiver grass — Vetiveria Zizanoides — is a remarkable plant which many farmers prize for its role in soil and water conservation. Vetiver originated in India but is now cultivated in many other countries. Botanically it is related to Sorghum. Vetiver’s particular characteristics are that it is exceptionally deep rooting, with roots up to 3m long, it only multiplies vegetatively, it is largely unpalatable to livestock, and it tolerates a wide range of growing conditions.  \nHow does Vetiver help farmers?  \nVetiver is primarily used to manage the flow of water, so that more of the rain which falls enters the soil rather than running off and carrying valuable soil with it. This is where the deep roots come into their own, channelling water down into the soil and conserving it for use by growing crops.  \nVetiver also has secondary uses as boundary marking for fields and providing a source of grass which is good for thatching and for weaving to make useful articles.  \nUsed as thatch, or for weaving, Vetiver is very durable due to its high silica content, which also makes it unpalatable to termites as well as livestock. Goats will eat the young shoots, but the shoots soon recover. Once established, Vetiver also recovers quickly if for any reason it is exposed to fire.  \nMark the contours on the land you wish to protect.
