Often comprising the waste products of a previous crop, the organic nutrients it contains are recycled to enhance the growth of the farmer’s current or future crops. The application of compost becomes all the more important when the soil has been depleted by floods, especially if those floods are caused by rising sea levels that deposit quantities of salt on the land.  \nBecause of climate change, this is becoming an ever more frequent occurrence in places like Bangladesh. One solution that is being tried there is a special type of compost known as vermicompost —that is, compost produced by a species of worm called Eisenia fetida.  \nThese worms turn food and vegetable waste into a rich fertiliser that soon helps to restore depleted and salt-laden soils so that better crops can be harvested.  \nAn advantage of using these worms to produce the compost is that they can be housed in stacked-up containers so as to obtain maximum benefit within  \na minimum of floor-space.  \nThe top container is ventilated and covered.
