Echo can barely speak as River helps her keep going, reading shimmering mirages and fighting dizziness under a punishing sun. When they spot a structure like a distant, jagged hope, exhaustion nearly overwhelms Echo, yet River refuses to leave her. Over a hill, they reach a vast, neglected garden with surviving fruit trees and crops, revealing the possibility of water and survival.","Venom Rising \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nTAMAR SLOAN HEIDI CATHERINE \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nChapter \nOne \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nECHO \nE cho rubs her eyes, too weak to ask River if he can see what she’s just \nnoticed. He inches his way forward, his feet dragging rather than stepping. She follows, each movement sending aches reverberating through her depleted body. \nIt’s only been a handful of hours since the Worker released them into the Extinction Zone. This falls well short of the lifetime Echo hoped to spend by River ’s side when they ran into the nothingness filled with blind confidence. But it’s more than she feared they were going to get when Oren first captured them, so for that she’s grateful. \nShe parts her cracked lips, trying to form some words in her parched mouth. \nRiver hears her struggle and turns to her. If it weren’t for the fact she hasn’t let go of his hand this whole time, she’d wonder if the person beside her had switched places with the guy she loves. His face is coated with orange dust. His hair is standing on end in stiff tendrils. His green eyes are bloodshot. \n“Look,” she croaks, tilting her chin to point to the horizon.“There.” \nRiver squints as he tries to focus. Then he sees it. His eyes widen and he draws in a breath. \nSince they set off, they’ve seen a few shimmering stretches of land in the distance that turned out to be nothing more than a trick of the eye. The first had them running at twice the pace. The second, cautiously marching forward. The third, walking at a slow but steady rate. They don’t have the energy left for another disappointment. \n“It’s different,” she says, forcing her voice to cooperate. \nRiver nods. This apparition is rising from the earth, transforming the horizon into a jagged line with a point in the middle. Could there possibly be something out here in this land of nothingness? \nThey stumble as they walk, dizziness gripping Echo’s senses as the unforgiving sun beats down. They both know if this turns out to be nothing more than another mirage, it will also be the end for them. It’s going to take everything they have left to find out. \nRiver ’s hand is bone dry, and Echo squeezes it weakly. Their bodies gave up the idea of producing sweat to keep them cool long ago. Their cells need to hold onto the little moisture they have left. They need to find some water and they need it very soon. \nEcho’s legs buckle and her grasp on River breaks. She tumbles to the hard ground, wincing as the gravel scratches her knees. Her head spins as she tries to get up. The temptation to give into the fatigue burns like fire in her belly. If she could just lie down on the earth and let it swallow what’s left of her, this nightmare would end. \nThey shouldn’t have walked this far. They should have found their way back to the Green Zone and taken their chances there. Or the Dead Zone. Out here is certain death. It’s called the Extinction Zone for a reason. But it’s too late to turn back now. She’s not even sure they could find their way. Everything looks the same. For all she knows, they’re walking in one giant circle. \nRiver ’s face looms before her. He hauls her to her feet, and she knows she can’t give up. Especially not now that hope is hovering in the distance. They might be in the Extinction Zone, but they’re most certainly not extinct. \n“It’s a building,” says River, pointing at the horizon. “Tall, like the Sting.” \nEcho rubs at her eyes. She can see what River ’s talking about but surely it’s not a building. Maybe it’s a rock formation or a dead tree. It’s just that…it does look an awful lot like a building. Like a squarer version of the Sting. \nUnlocking some energy from deep within her depleted reserves, Echo takes River ’s hand and they shuffle forward. Each step is bringing them closer. And each step confirms what River just said. \nOver the crest of a gentle hill, the spire of a building is visible. Echo doubts it’s inhabited.
