The report reviews the present extent of these infections, highlights underreporting and regional pockets of high prevalence, and explains why contagion risk remains despite penicillin. \nRICHARD M.BoECKEL,EditorBUEL W.PATCH,A8ociate Editor \n# VENEREAL DISEASE CONTROL\n\nD ECENT REVERSAL of a long downward trend in inci-K dence of syphilis and gonorrhea has brought a sharpreminder that the battle against these ancient scourgesis far from won. While the present VD rate is far belowwhat it was 15 years ago, thanks chiefly to penicillin, publichealth officers warn that serious obstacles to eradicationof these diseases remain. So long as infected persons gountreated, the danger of epidemics persists. \nGrowth of the so-called social diseases among teenagershas caused special concern.Moral implications aside, thespread of syphilis and gonorrhea in the lower age groupspresents a particularly serious problem, because the suffer-ers tend to keep knowledge of the condition to themselves.Early symptoms then disappear and the victims becomesubject to the later degenerative phases of their affliction.Already an increase has been noted in the incidence ofcongenital syphilis among infants born of infected mothers.Demands for remounting of the concentrated anti-VD cam-paigns of past years are now being heard. The effort wouldbe aimed chiefly at tracking down all infected personsand bringing them under treatment.Medical experts atpresent know no other way to break the chain of infection. \nPRESENT ExTENT OF SYPHILIS AND GoNORRHEA \nThe actual extent of VD is uncertain because syphilisand gonorrhea have almost always been under-reported.Back in the mid-1930s,a U.S.Public Health Service surveyshowed something like 700,000 syphilitics under medicaltreatment, but authoritative estimates put the total numberof sufferers at six million. One million fresh infectionsof gonorrhea were being reported by doctors each year, but many more infected persons were believed to be prac-ticing self-medication.1 \nThe number of cases reported in more recent years is \n# Editorial Research Reports\n\nconsiderably lower.Data from public health departmentsshowed that 120,000 cases of syphilis(exclusive of militarycases)were known to authorities in the year ended June \n30,1959.But Dr.Robert J.Anderson, chief of the Com-municable Disease Center of the U.S.Public Health Service, estimated recently that there were 1.2 million persons inthe United States“who have been infected by the spirocheteof syphilis and who have never received adequate treat-ment.”2 Some 237,300 cases of gonorrhea were reportedin the year ended June 30,1959,but health officers believethat the actual number infected each year is close to onemillion.Gonorrhea, though a less serious illness thansyphilis,is more infectious, develops more quickly, and morepeople are susceptible to it. \nOn the basis of reported cases alone, gonorrhea andsyphilis rank third and fourth respectively among all re-portable communicable diseases in the number of individ-uals known to be infected.8 Approximately 70 of every100,000 persons in the United States have syphilis insome stage of development, and 137 of every 100,000 sufferfrom gonorrhea.Although this i","cbCaiqKsqBqWlfjP","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiqKsqBqWlfjP","pdf",4108879,21,"English","#
