SCIENCE AT BRAE MAR \nBIOLOGY-UNITS 3 + 4 \nThis year , the relevance of the VCE Biology Study Design was foregrounded by the current COVID-19 pandemic , with immunology , causative agents of disease , and biological knowledge in society being some of the most relevant studies. As the class emerges from the final topic of Area of Study Two , strategies to deal with the emergence \nof new diseases , one begins to reflect on the outstanding connections that have \nbeen made between textbook examples and the recent events in , and preventative measures taken by , nations across the world. \nWe have since commenced Area of Study One for unit 4 , our second of the unit , which focusses on the relatedness of species and evolutionary evidence and processes. Thus far , we have examined changes in biodiversity across time , making note of: \n fossils and conditions conducive to fossilisation \n the fossil record as evidence for evolution , including gaps in the record and theories to explain such absences (gradualism and punctuated equilibrium) and the dating of fossils (using means such as electron spin resonance , index fossils , radiometric dating , stratigraphy , tree rings , and luminescence techniques) \n developmental biology as evidence for common ancestry , namely comparative embryology \n structural morphology as evidence for evolution , including vestigial structures (for example , the coccyx , the terminal vertebrae of the spinal column) , analogous structures (such as a streamlined body shape) , and homologous structures (for instance , the pentadactyl limb) \nSoon , the class will commence study on the mechanisms of evolution , examining the processes of evolution; the causes of changing allele frequencies in a population ’ s gene pool including types of mutations , environmental selection pressures on phenotypes as the mechanism for natural selection , gene flow , and genetic drift and the biological consequences of such changes in terms of increased or reduced genetic diversity; and the manipulation of gene pools through selective breeding programs. \nAs always , biology proves to be a broad and engrossing subject – one which I highly recommend to anyone who may be in the midst of a subject selection crisis. \n- Myles Courtney , VCE Biology , Chemistry , and Environmental Science student \nCHE MS TRY UNITS 1 + 2 \nThe Che-mystery of Water \nWhat has the Unit 1&2 Chemistry cohort been \ndoing lately? We started off the term by looking at dihydrogen monoxide , a colourless , odour less liquid with a p H of 7. \nIt can be found in most lakes , rivers and even foods. H2O has many useful properties , like being able to absorb a lot of energy before increasing in temperature (high specific heat capacity) or changing state (high latent heat) , thanks to strong bonds between molecules. One oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms are held together by sharing electrons , but since Ois a large atom , it hogs the electrons , giving the molecule positive and negative poles. The – and + ends of water molecules are attracted to eachother , forming a ‘ hydrogen bond ’. \nWater is also great for dissolving stuff. Well , anything polar. Crystals are made by dissolving solutes at high temperatures then cooling the solution down. So why not have a look at this week ’ s science challenge , and check out how to make crystals at home from items in your pantry \n- SB , VCE Chemistry and Biology Student \n(Thanks for the promotion , SB!) \nENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE-UNITS 1 + 2 \nCurrently in the Units 1&2 Environmental Science Class , the topic of Pollutants and its associated concepts are being taught , focussing on the subtle legal and technical differences between pollutants , contaminants , and wastes , and how these substances are transported and processed within and between environments. \nNext up is toxicity , and what doses and level of exposure of a toxin appear to have an effect on an organism (the dose-response relationship) .
