A study is a subject, for example, English or Biology. A study is made up of four units (Units 1, 2, 3 and 4), each of which is a semester in length.
For most students, VCE is completed over two years (year eleven and year twelve) .
Students typically study Units 1 and 2 in their first year (Year eleven), and Units 3 and 4 in their second year (year twelve) .
Unit 1 or Unit 2 of a study can be completed as stand-alone units. For example, a student can study Business Management Unit 1 and Legal Studies Unit 2. Unit 1 & 2 studies are not scored, meaning students do not receive a study score and, although they count towards the VCE, they do not contribute to the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) .
Units 3 and 4 must be studied as a sequence. Students need to complete the sequence in the same year if a study score is to be calculated. Unit 3 and 4 sequences are scored and contain both school-based assessment (SACs and SATs) and external assessment (VCAA exams) . Upon completion of a unit 3 & 4 sequence, most students receive a study score. Study scores can contribute towards the ATAR.
Although there are technically no prerequisites for entry into Units 1, 2 & 3, the school advises students, as much as possible, to complete unit 1-4 sequences. In most studies, Units 1&2 form the foundation for Units 3 & 4
Students at Sacré Cœur may begin VCE studies in Year 10 with an enrolment in one VCE Unit study at Unit 1 & 2 (if approved) .
In year 11, all students undertake a minimum of 13 VCE units, including 1 unit of Religion & Society and 2 units from the English group. AT year 11, students may include one Unit 3 & 4 sequence in their program (if approved) .
In year 12, students undertake a minimum of 10 VCE units at 3&4 level, including Unit 3 & 4 English. Faith development in Year 12 is the focus of the reflection days attended by Year 12 students throughout the year.
Any alternative arrangements to a student’s VCE program from those described above must be approved in writing by the Director of Learning and Teaching. Students who are intending to enrol in a VCE study delivered by an external provider, please contact Mr. Peter Harrington, Director of Learning and Teaching prior to enrolment.
VCE COURSE OF STUDY

| | Unit 1 | Unit 2 | Units 3&4 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Year
10 | One unit 1 study (op􀆟onal) | One unit 2 study (op􀆟onal) | |
| Year
11 | Unit 2 Religion and Society (Compulsory) | | One Unit 3&4 sequence (op􀆟onal) |
| | Unit 1 English
Five addi􀆟onal unit 1 studies
(four if completing an optional unit 3 study) | Unit 2 English
Five addi􀆟onal unit 2 studies
(four if completing an optional unit 4 study) | |
| Year
12 | | | Unit 3 & 4 English
Four addi􀆟onal Unit 3 & 4 sequences |

Study choices
Unit 1 & 2
Religion and Society U2 (compulsory Year 11) English (compulsory Year 11)
Accounting
Art Making & Exhibiting Biology
Business Management Chemistry
Computing: Applied Computing Economics
French
Mathematics: General Maths
Mathematics: Maths Methods
Mathematics: Specialist Maths
Health & Human Development History: Modern History
Japanese Legal Studies Literature Media
Music Performance Physical Education Physics
Politics Psychology Theatre Studies
Visual Communication Design
Unit 3 & 4
English (Compulsory Year 12) Accounting
Art Making & Exhibiting Biology *
Business Management* Chemistry
Computing: Software Development Economics
French
Mathematics: General Maths*
Mathematics: Maths Methods
Mathematics: Specialist Maths Health & Human Development*
History: Australian* Japanese
Legal Studies*
Literature
Media
Music Repertoire Performance* Ph","cbCaiarOIStFbZtF","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiarOIStFbZtF","pdf",296954,"English","# VCE Pathways (Year 11 and 12)
## VCE course structure and unit rules
## Study choices (Unit 1–2 and Unit 3–4)
## VET in VCE and ATAR contribution
## Timeline for subject selection process (VCE 2025)","[{"question":"How is the VCE course structured for Years 11 and 12?","answer":"VCE consists of studies made up of units.
