Many secondary students believe that Legal Studies is only for those planning to study law at university. That is very far from true. \nMany decades ago, Australian-born judge Lord Atkin told students in Birmingham that law should be taught as a Year 12 subject because a knowledge of the law and its administration should be part of the ordinary equipment of the good and efficient citizen. He would be very pleased that the Victorian secondary curriculum includes Legal Studies and Civics and Citizenship (which has a substantial law component) and he would be very pleased that weare all here today. \nWhat I am going to do now is outline some ways in which you can maximise your performance in Units 1 and 2. Some of this you may well have heard from your own teachers but it won’t do any harm for me to reinforce it. If you have any questions, please put up your hands. I have no problem with answering questions as we move along. \nREMEMBER: \nWhat you do in Units 1 and 2 has direct impact on your performance in Units 3 and 4. \nWhat should I be doing now? \nAside from the obvious advice about attending classes and completing set tasks, there are a few steps that can be taken right now which will pay off when it comes to dealing withoutcomes or examinations. \n• Obtain a copy of the VCE Legal Studies Study Design. This can be downloaded from [www.vcaa.vic.edu.au](www.vcaa.vic.edu.au) and sets out EXACTLY what the course requires you to study. THIS SHOULD BE YOUR REVISION GUIDE. \n• Make your topic notes NOW so that you are ready to use them for revision when classes end. CoverALL sections that have been tackled in class. Do NOT leave gaps and do NOT specialise in your favourite topics. \n• Develop case notes setting out FIDS: FACTS, ISSUES, DECISION, SIGNIFICANCE. Note: Significance includes where the case example may be used as an example, what impact the decision had on existing law and the extent to which the case [supports the principles of justice.](supports the principles of justice. www.austlii.edu.au)[ ](supports the principles of justice. www.austlii.edu.au)[www.austlii.edu.au](supports the principles of justice. www.austlii.edu.au) is an excellent source of case reports and legislation from all Australian jurisdictions. \n• A sample case note on the Rebel Wilson case is attached at the end of this document. \n• Develop notes on key pieces of legislation discussed during class or in your text reading. \n• Familiarise yourself with primary source materials. A great website is [www.courts.vic.gov.au](www.courts.vic.gov.au), which is a portal site for all Victorian courts and tribunals. \n• The County Court of Victoria has recently updated its library of case studies for \nstudents to use. It is recommended you explore and familiarize yourself with these cases as they can be used in your answers. You may access these here: \nVCE case studies-County Court of Victoria \n• Look and listen! Read newspapers and watch TV news programs to keep up to date about changes or proposed changes to laws and the legal system. \n• Make sure you have clear definitions ofterms used in criminal and civil law. \n• Draw a diagram of court jurisdictions and avenues of appeals. You will find this very helpful. \n• Consider using system cards which contain short notes on specific elements of the course. You can flick through these from time to time to check what you know – or don’t know. \nCommon task words used in task questions \n\n| Analyse | A critical examination identifying the essential elements of features and principles |\n| --- | --- |\n| Apply | Use the information to illustrate meaning: makes links or connections, shows relationships |\n| Assess | Weigh up the value of |\n| Comment on | Make relevant remarks about (that show an understanding of) |\n| Compare and contrast | Compare means to show","cbCaiguMaIhdXDIc","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiguMaIhdXDIc","pdf",444756,14,"English","# Law Studies Units 1 & 2 performance focus\n## Myth-busting and why Legal Studies matters\n## Actions to maximise outcomes in Units 1 and 2\n## Case notes and key legislation preparation\n## Primary sources and staying current\n## Task words used in question types\n## Knowledge audit for course familiarity","[{\"question\":\"Why is Legal Studies Units 1 and 2 important for later units?\",\"answer\":\"The factsheet states that what students do in Units 1 and 2 has direct impact on performance in Units 3 and 4.\"},{\"question\":\"What should students use as their revision guide?\",\"answer\":\"Obtain a copy of the VCE Legal Studies Study Design, which sets out exactly what the course requires and should be used as the revision guide.\"},{\"question\":\"How should students structure effective case notes?\",\"answer\":\"Develop case notes using FIDS: Facts, Issues, Decision, Significance, where Significance includes where the case can be used and the impact on existing law.\"}]","VCE Factsheet - VCE Legal Studies Units 1 & 2 - Law Talks Study Tips | PDF",1789904779,35]
