John Wilson-Harris, Director of Fagan Architects, spoke about the painstaking restoration process, with technical details of great interest to the many conservation-minded VASSA members and visitor architects.  \nThe FoMM team and mill, before and after ([https://mostertsmill.co.za/gallery/](https://mostertsmill.co.za/gallery/)) .  \nAll that remained were the thick walls and bits of metal fixtures and fittings. Immediately after the fire there was a deliberate effort to clear out and remove all the remaining metalwork to a place of safety, and it has been reused. Plans, drawings and photographs from previous restorations in 1935 and 1995 were available as a reference, and shortly before the fire repair work had been completed with the help of Andy Selfe, together with a complete 3D rendering of the mill and the workings by Zamani laser survey in 2020.  \nThe mill has been completely rebuilt and will be once again a working windmill. This is an extraordinary achievement and witness to the power of passion and collaboration between people who care, local and overseas. Money was raised, plans drawn up, official approvals received, and parts were made at various workshops. The contributions of Dutch millers and interest groups was crucial. Three of the millers-Sven Verbeek, Leo Elbers and Gerard Wijngaarden-attended the talk, having flown from the Netherlands and driven from Jo’burg to Cape Town with brand new sail clothsand a pennant in the boot of their hire car. The grindstones were shipped by sea and have just arrived in Cape Town harbour.  \nThe April Outing will be to the Mill and the Van Reenen burial ground on the other side of the road. A report will appear in the next Newsletter.  \nMORE MILLS  \nThe three Netherlanders visited De Nieuwe Mill in the grounds of the Alexandria Hospital, Maitland, the following day. Then they visited Onze Molen in Durbanville. Here are their Facebook reports:  \nAMID THE NOISE AND HASTE  \n‘Who lies in the little graveyard on the Groote Schuur Campus’, by Margaret Cairns, Alumni UCT, Spring 1984.  \nThousands of UCT staff and students daily pass the little white-walled graveyard lying below Devil's Peak beside the road leading to the upper campus. How many give a thought to those who sleep in that burial place almost in the shadow of the Rhodes Memorial?  \nLying on the farm Welgelegen this resting place is commonly known by that name or as 'Mostert's graveyard' . The slate inset on a gate pillar provides more precise information as to its origin namely that it is 'The family burial place of Gysbert van Reenen and Sybrand Jacobus Mostert and their descendants, established 1827. ' [No longer there.]  \nGysbertus was father-in-law to Sybrand and they were successive owners of the farm whose eventual 244 morgen sprawled over the slopes of Devil's Peak. The history of this estate forms a complex pattern and commences with a grant of 6 morgen in 1676 to Cornelis Stevensz Botma as an addition to his adjacent property, Zorgvliet, which lay in a southerly direction. Many morgen of these two estates now form part of the University of Cape Town and although the name Zorgvliet has not been perpetuated by UCT, that of Welgelegen still remains attached to the Herbert Baker version of the old farm homestead that once stood on the same site.
