I like being called by my name, which means curious.
My house is made of leaves, and I love it. The forest near my home is my favorite place. But I’m happiest when I’m swimming in the river.
At home, we all work. My parents sew clothes. My father, Buwa, also plays music for weddings, pujas, and fairs. He plays the panchebaja with others in the village.
Buwa loves his dholki, tyamko, damaha, sanai, jhyali, karnal and narsinga . After each performance, he wipes them clean until they shine. Then he stores them away for another day.
3
My mother, Aama, puts all her sewing materials in a bokcho . Herbokcho looks like my bookbag. She puts her customers’ clothes in the topmost part of her bokcho and bits and pieces of leftover materials in the middle. At the very bottom, she stores her needles, thread, scissors, thimble, buttons, hooks, and money. Aama’s entire world is in her bokcho.
My job is to deliver clothes to her customers. And when I don’t have school, I help Aama
with her sewing.
My parents are always working. Sometimes I wish I were a needle and thread, or even oneof Buwa’s musical instruments. Maybe then my parents would play with me .
In the evenings, Buwa sometimes plays the sanai. How can such a sweet melody come out of something that looks like a thin pipe? Our neighbors come out to listen to the music. Sometimes they laugh. Sometimes they cry.
When they insist, Aama gives in and sings –
“Like cattle,
We are given away
But there is no love in our new homes
Unwelcome here or there, we survive in the halfway”
Most days, Aama has to walk for two or three hours to sit in a customer’s yard and sew. She can just look at the shape and size of her customers and cut out incredible designs from raw cloth. There isn’t anyone who doesn’t like Aama’s tailoring.
Sometimes I think Aama is a magician! She doesn’t even need a measuring tape. She measures with her fingers and palms, and sometimes she measures with thread. When I see Aama at work, she reminds me of my math teacher who teaches us how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.","cbCaioXD0LK3bIv7","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaioXD0LK3bIv7","pdf",1599942,27,"English","# Utsukta’s Name and Home
## Sewing Work at Home
## Father’s Music and Care for Instruments
## Mother’s Bokcho and Tools
## Delivering Clothes and Helping With Sewing
## Evening Music and the Song
## Sewing for Customers and Measuring Without Tools","[{"question":"What does Utsukta’s name mean and why does she like it?","answer":"Utsukta likes being called by her name because it means “curious.”"},{"question":"What work do Utsukta’s parents do at home?","answer":"Her parents sew clothes, and her father also plays music for weddings, pujas, and fairs using instruments with village others."},{"question":"How does Utsukta’s mother prepare for sewing her customers’ clothes?","answer":"She keeps all sewing materials in a bokcho, storing tools and organizing leftover fabrics, then walks to customers’ yards to cut and sew designs."}]","Utsukta Sews Songs Sarita Pariyar | PDF",1789896111,42]
