Often treated by surgical excision, electrodessication and curettage, or Mohs surgery, treatment can frequently leave patients with a scar and can be time consuming and inconvenient for both patients and healthcare providers. Utilizing non-ablative fractional laser therapy followed by tirbanibulin ointment, we treated 30 basal and/or squamous cell carcinomas on 23 patients over the age of 50 with varying skin types. Multiple areas of the face and body, and carcinomas at differing stages, were treated. We maximized the depth of penetration of the fractional laser by using bulk heating methods while simultaneously optimizing cosmetic results. This is an ongoing study as we continue to track the progress of our participants. Thus far, no clinical or histological recurrence of carcinoma has been found in any of the treated sites. \nKeywords Skin cancer · Basal cell carcinoma · Squamous cell carcinoma · Fractional laser · Cancer research \nIntroduction \nKeratinocyte carcinoma, which includes basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), is the most common form of cancer in the United States [1] . These nonmelanoma skin cancers typically arise from excessive, long-term exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The depth of penetration of keratinocyte carcinomas can vary. The early forms are SCCs in situ and superficial BCCs, which inhabit the epidermis and later stages can extend to its full thickness. These cancers differ in their origins as SCCs in situ begin in the upper portion of the epidermis, while superficial BCCs begin in the lower portion at the basal layer. Nodular BCCs, infiltrating BCCs, and invasive SCCs extend past the epidermis and partially into or through the entirety of the dermis [8, 10]. The current most commonly accepted treatments for SCCs and BCCs depending on the location and depth, are surgical removal, electrodessication and curettage, or Mohs surgery. Although these treatments were created to limit the \n* Gillian M. Nanni [gilliannanni@outlook.com](gilliannanni@outlook.com) \nBruce P. The MTZsare administered over multiple passes in a designated area to allow for rapid healing and a better cosmetic outcome. This allows specificity in the treatment of various skin conditions without harming unnecessary surrounding tissue [12] . The fractional laser used in our research is a non-ablative laser with two wavelength settings. The 1550 nm (erbium laser) can penetrate the skin up to 1.6 mm (1600 µm) and emit up to 70 mJ, and the 1927 nm (thulium laser) penetrates up to 0.3 mm (300 µm) emitting up to 20 mJ [24] . \nA study by Oltulu et al. studied the epidermal thickness of various body parts on middle-aged skin samples excluding the face. Results showed that the mean depth of the epidermis in females aged 30–40 years ranges from the thinnest at the breast (76.9 µm), to the thickest at the dorsum of the foot (267.4 µm) . For men aged 31–40 years, the mean epidermal depth is thinnest at the scalp (112.4 µm) and thickest at the dorsum of the hand (244.8 µm) [20] . Another study by Chopra et al. analyzed the average skin depths ofthe face and showed that the thinnest epidermis was at the posterior auricular (29.5","cbCaiajYuXjCDeAG","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiajYuXjCDeAG","pdf",2565718,14,"English","# Abstract\n# Keywords\n# Introduction","[{\"question\":\"Why are standard keratinocyte carcinoma treatments often problematic?\",\"answer\":\"Surgical excision, electrodessication and curettage, or Mohs surgery can be time consuming and inconvenient, and they frequently leave patients with scars.\"},{\"question\":\"How was the fractional laser therapy designed to support treatment goals?\",\"answer\":\"A non-ablative fractional laser with two wavelength settings was used, and depth of penetration was maximized with bulk heating methods while simultaneously optimizing cosmetic outcomes.\"},{\"question\":\"How does tirbanibulin ointment relate to the treated cancers?\",\"answer\":\"Tirbanibulin is used topically for actinic keratoses, which can progress into squamous cell carcinoma and less commonly into basal cell carcinomas, and it works by inhibiting epidermal microtubules.\"}]","Utilizing fractional lasers and tirbanibulin ointment to treat squamous and basal cell carcinomas | PDF",1789998887,35]
