INFORMATION\n\n5:1 \n# Using MedicalAbbreviations\n\nAs a health care worker, you will see many abbre-viations.You will be expected to recognize themost common abbreviations. This section pro-vides a basic list of these abbreviations. \nAbbreviatioms are shortened forms ofwords, usuallyjustletters.Common examples areAM,which means morning, and PM,which meansafternoon or evening. \nAbbreviations are used in many health fields.Sometimes they are used by themselves;othertimes, several abbreviations are combined to giveorders or directions.Consider the followingexamples: \nBRc BRP,FFlqh,VS qid \nNPO8 PM,To Lab for CBC,BUN,and FBS \nThese examples are short forms for givingdirections. The first example is interpreted as fol-lows:bedrest with bathroom privileges, force flu-ids every hour, vital signs four times a day.Thesecond example is interpreted as follows:nothingbymouth after eight o'clockin the evening,to thelaboratory for a complete blood count, bloodurea nitrogen, and fasting blood sugar. As theseexamples illustrate,it is much easier to writeusing abbreviations than it is to write the corre-sponding detailed messages. \nA sample list of abbreviations and symbolsfollows. This list contains some of the most com-monly used abbreviations.Different abbrevia-tions may be used in different facilities and indifferent parts of the country. It is the responsibil-ity ofhealth care workers tolearn the meanings ofthe abbreviations used in the agencies where theyare employed. \nNOTE:There is agrowing trend toward eliminatingperiodsfrom most abbreviations.Although thefol-lowing list does not show periods, you may workin \nan agency that chooses to use them. When indoubt, follow the policy ofyour agency. \nNOTE:Learn the abbreviations in the following \nway: \n1.Use a set of index cards to make a set of flash-cards of the abbreviations found on the abbre-viation list.Print one abbreviation in bigletters on each card.Put the abbreviation onthe front of the card and the meaning on theback ofthe card. \n2.Use the flashcards to study the abbreviations.A realistic goal is to learn all abbreviations forone letter per week. For example, learn all of theAs the first week, all of the Bs the second week, all of the Cs the third week, and so on until allare learned. \n3.Prepare for weekly tests on the abbreviations. The tests will be cumulative. They will cover theletter of the weekplus anyletters learned in pre-vious weeks. \nA \n@atbeforeA&Dadmission and dischargeA&Panterior and posterior, anatomy and physiologyaaof eachAbabortionabdabdomen, abdominalABGarterial blood
