Roller,a counselor at Newport High School in Oregon, felt that the \nstandardized test her school used—the Smarter Balance Assessment (SBACC)—wasfalling short in certain areas when it came to supporting her 11th graders.AlthoughSBACC satisfied the state's requirement to measure students'knowledge,it didn'tgive students valuable feedback or help them with college and career planning.Italso built educational and financial barriers for students, limiting their growth andopportunity. \nIn order to get a college reportable score and possiblyqualify for more than 450 scholarships through the Officeof Student Access and Completion (OSAC),studentshad to register for the ACT test independently, pay thefee, and transport themselves to the testing center ona Saturday. But,most Newport students couldn't takethe test because they were very involved at school andin the community. Many were from low-income families, participating in sports, taking care ofyounger siblings, orworking. \nVicky and the Lincoln County School District startedto lookat other solutions that could satisfy the state \nSUPPORTINCTHEWHOLE STUDENT \n# Using ACT Data to Start Conversations,Remove Barriers,&Open Doors\n\nassessment requirement while also helping studentschoose classes, access scholarships, and plan for college. They decided that the best assessment was the ACT. \n\"We found that the ACT was a testthat could look at thewhole child;something tangible that we can use to satisfythe compliance piece while also being something helpfulfor our kids. All of the supports ACT offers, besidesyourtypical Composite score, was why our Director of SecondaryEd decided to go towards the ACT.” \nVicky Roller \nBy offering the ACT free of charge to every 11th graderduring the school day,the Newport staff feels they arefurther supporting equity among all students. Many moredoors are opened and many barriers are removed. With acollege-reportable score,Newport students can use it toapply to colleges and qualify for scholarships through theOSAC.And the results speak for themselves: \n# Scholarship Earnings by GraduatesBefore and After Schoolwide Testing\n\nNo ACT testing \nSecond year of \nFirst year of \nACT testing \nACT testing \nVicky also uses the ACT data to start meaningful con-versations about academic improvement and futureplanning. When students receive their score reports, shecan see which subject areas students are succeeding atand/or struggling in.Using that information, she helpsstudents pick their classes based on their strengths andweaknesses. On a school level, the data Newport collectsfrom the ACT helps with curriculum improvement. \n“The ACT data is helping us have conversations about whatour students need to be successfulat when they leave ourschool—whether they're going into career or they're goingto college.I think that we've just begun to scratch thesurface of really how we can use the ACT data to serve ourstudents.\" \nVicky Roller \nThe most important advantage of using the data fromthe ACT score report has been getting students to dreambigger.Newport has a rigorous curriculum, but in aruralcommunity a student's aspirations can be limited.Vickytalks all the time with students who have a high GPA andACT score, are taking advanced classes, and are doingdual enrollment, but who think their only option is to stayin town and attend a community college. \nVicky sits down with students and families and recom-mends specific college and career options with the datato validate her recommendations. She can show howa student's ACT score and classroom work match whatincoming students at a private university or large publicuniversity are achieving. So,by the time a student reach-es the spring of their senioryear, they're aware of all theopen doors available to them. \n\"I can have a student look at their transcript,at what they'vedone here at Newport,at their GPA,and at their ACT scores.I can make them realize, with the data right here, thatthey meet the minimum requirements forall those things,maybe","cbCaigtQY5EJd546","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaigtQY5EJd546","pdf",52990,"English","# Using ACT Data to Start Conversations,Remove
