Please delete these notes before printing  \nUsing a Sandbar to Grow Pumpkins  \nEvery year millions of people across the world are affected by sudden floods that destroy their crops and homes. As the floods subside, what they leave behind is often a sandbar: a large area of barren, shifting sand on which it is impossible to farm as usual.  \nBut it is possible to grow pumpkins on a sandbar, by cultivating them in pits. Here is how you can do this.  \n(1) Find a suitable site and dig some pits, each about 1 metre deep and 1 metre in diameter. Allow a space of about 2 metres between the pits.  \n(2) Fill a jute sack with compost — a mixture of cow dung, soil and water — and place one in each pit. (Or you may have compost from last year’s crop.)  \n(3) After a few days, sow pumpkin seeds in the pits.  \n(4) Watch the compost pits carefully over the next 5 months and water the plants as necessary. At the end of that time you should be able to harvest up to 10 pumpkins from each pit. Pumpkin leaves can be cooked as a vegetable, and the seeds inside a pumpkin are also good to eat, as well as the flesh.  \nYou can store the pumpkins after harvest for over a year in your home, for example on a bamboo rack like this one.  \nThis will ensure a food supply for your family.
