The example of an internal inspection of a reactor tank is used throughout this series to illustrate how a specific work task can require critical safety documents.
SCOPE:
Kennecott Utah Copper – Smelter
RESPONSIBILITY:
Operations: Smelter Standard Operating Procedure and Safety Isolation Writers
HEALTH & SAFETY:
P&IDs are used, with certain KUCC Health and Safety Standards, to describe equipment and processes for procedures that are safe and current. These standards can be found on the KUCC intranet.
Review KUCC Standard No. 14.3, Management of Change (MOC) to see how this standard is applicable to the change you are going to make to the P&ID. Review the MOC files to see if this change has already been accounted for and approved. If this change has not been accounted for in an existing MOC, an MOC must be generated and approved before the revised P&ID can be entered into Documentum .
See 29 CFR 1910.119(d) for P&IDs that are used for conducting process hazard analyses on equipment and processes that are governed by OSHA's Process Safety Management (PSM) standard.
ENVIRONMENTAL:
P&IDs are used to describe systems that are used to achieve compliance with certain KUCC environmental standards, practices, and policies.

| Page 1 of 9 | Plant: Smelter |
| --- | --- |
| PRINTED COPIES ARE UNCONTROLLED | |

KUC00011.00
KENNECOTT UTAH COPPER CORPORATION

|
STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE
Update P&IDs for Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Safety Isolations | | |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Effective Date: 11/29/07 | Document Number: SMSOP500-0025 | Rev: 00 |

DEFINITIONS & ABBREVIATIONS:
AG-Agitator
CFR-Code of Federal Regulations
-CV-Conveyor HV-Hand valve
-M Motor (electric)
MOC – Management of Change
OSHA-Occupational Safety and Health Administration P&IDs – Piping and Instrument Diagrams
-PP-Pump
-PRW-Process Water
-RE-Reactor
-SLA-Acidic Slurry
SOP – Standard Operating Procedure
TRACK – acronym for: Think through the Task
Recognize the Hazards Assess the Risks Control the Hazards
Keep Safety First in all Tasks
-VPB-Vent to SO2 Scrubber
REFERENCES:
P&IDs:
500-66-001, P&ID Piping Legend

| Page 2 of 9 | Plant: Smelter |
| --- | --- |
| PRINTED COPIES ARE UNCONTROLLED | |

KUC00011.00
KENNECOTT UTAH COPPER CORPORATION

|
STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE
Update P&IDs for Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Safety Isolations | | |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Effective Date: 11/29/07 | Document Number: SMSOP500-0025 | Rev: 00 |

500-66-002, Instrumentation Legend and Symbols P&ID
500-66-301, Hydrometallurgical Plant P&ID Diagram Piping Legend
500-66-302, Hydrometallurgical Plant Instrumentation Legend & Symbols P&ID Equipment Number(s): N/A
Risk Analysis: Risk ID\\# -N/A
Isolation Procedure: N/A
Job Safety Analysis Number: N/A
Additional SOPs:
SMSOP500-0001, Control and Revision Procedures for SOPs and JSAs
Note: This and the following SOPs are part of the Critical Linkages Training
and Management System:
SMSOP500-0004, Operation & Safety Document Development Overview SMSOP500-0024, Identifying a Task for a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) SMSOP500-0026, Evaluate and Revise a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) SMSOP500-0027, Develop","cbCaio1zTdl8x3MU","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaio1zTdl8x3MU","pdf",77214,"English","# Purpose
# Scope and Responsibility
# Health & Safety
## MOC requirements
## Process Safety Management reference
# Environmental
# Definitions & Abbreviations
# References
# Process Overview
## What P&IDs are and why they are controlled
## When to use the procedure","[{"question":"What is the purpose of this procedure?","answer":"It instructs how to update piping and instrument diagrams (P&IDs) for SOPs and safety isolations."},{"question":"When is an MOC required before updating a revised P&ID?","answer":"If the change has not already been accounted for in an existing Management of Change (MOC), an MOC must be generated and approved before entering the revised P&ID into Documentum."},{"question":"What does the procedure describe in the process overview?","answer":"It explains what P&IDs are, why they are controlled documents, and that P&IDs must be surveyed and marked up to revise or update them to reflect current equipment arrangements."}]","Update P&IDs for Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Safety Isolations - Rev 00 | PDF",23]
