Through Pedro’s story, the text contrasts punitive training methods such as prong collars with behavior-change tools like operant conditioning and classical conditioning. It explains how fear can be reinforced by pain, how learning is possible with appropriate, reward-based strategies, and why addressing the source of stress leads to lasting improvement. Veterinary supervision and risk awareness are emphasized in the disclaimer.","Thank you for downloading this Simon & Schuster ebook. \nGet a FREE ebook when you join our mailing list. A small rescue dog, he was part Scottish Terrier, part poodle, a black, scruАy guy making his owners’ lives miserable. They lived in an upscale, beautiful apartment together in Beverly Hills, and the dog had to betaken outside several times a day to potty. He tried relentlessly to attack the neighbors in the hallways, random people in the elevator, the doorman, and all the other dogs that lived in the building. Their previous trainer had put Pedro ina prong collar and instructed them to give him a leash correction—hard—whenever he began to lunge or growl or bark. \nI met Pedro when the owners brought him into my training center, telling my staА and me to keep our distance because he was unpredictable and snappy. And Pedro came in swinging, lunging and growling. Every time he did, they yanked so hard on the leash that he went Мying. I asked them to take oА the prong collar and just hold the leash. I threw a couple treats on the Мoor next to him and, being a smart guy, he quickly Йgured out that I was okay—or at least a good source of food. While I was tossing treats on the ground for him, the owners told me their vet had suggested that Pedro was missing half his brain, physically missing a hemisphere, because he didn’t seem capable of learning. That was the Йrst (and only) time I’d heard that. Owners sometimes say all kinds of weird things to explain away their dog’s behavioral issues, so I doubted this was true. What I did know was that Pedro Йgured out where the cookies were, fast, proving he was capable of learning after all. \nI never physically handle or touch dogs with aggressive tendencies on the Йrst meeting, so I stood just out of biting distance from Pedro and began to get his backstory. According to his owners, Pedro had belonged to an elderly woman in their building for two years, but he never left the apartment until she moved to \nan assisted care facility and the new owners adopted him. It was clear to me that Pedro was just a terriЙed little guy who’d had zero socialization and that his previous dog trainer had made things much worse by punishing his fearful responses with pain. \nI explained to the owners the two ways of changing behavior in the most simple of terms: operant conditioning (sit and then get a cookie) and classical conditioning. Classical conditioning pairs two unrelated things, such as in Pavlov’s famous dog experiment where dogs were taught that the sound of a bell meant food was coming. In Pedro’s case, classical conditioning was making him a mess. New, scary things plus pain from his prong collar was making him think that all new scary things caused pain. \nThe woman, Denise, patiently listened to me, then looked at me and simply said,“I have a PhD in psychology.” \n“Great!” I said, taking my foot out of my mouth,“then you ","cbCaigDhhLBWydeW","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaigDhhLBWydeW","pdf",15154847,1,253,"English","en",105,"# Introduction\n## Pedro’s background and training issues\n## Conditioning concepts: operant vs classical\n## Removing pain-based methods and building confidence\n## Addressing anxiety to reduce problem behaviors","[{\"question\":\"What are operant conditioning and classical conditioning as described in the introduction?\",\"answer\":\"Operant conditioning links an action with a reward (for example, sitting to get a cookie).
