The definition and the different methods used to represent function oriented software design were included in the discussion along with the definition and different methods used for representing function oriented software design. Methods like decision \ntrees, decision tables, data flow diagrams, structure charts, data dictionary and pseudocode have been described in detail in the previous unit. \nIn this unit we will discuss object oriented software design in detail. You will learn the basic notations and diagrams used in UML which will help us in building the foundation towards designing software products based on OOD approach. Class diagrams, use case diagrams and activity diagrams dictionary are also described in detail in this unit. In the next unit, we will explore the concepts related to software testing. \n9.3 OBJECT ORIENTED SOFTWARE DESIGN \nA good software product can be expected if it is followed by a good design. The basic purpose of software-design is to formalize the desired requirements of the software product and to specify these technically. With the ever changing list of user requirements a software product is always estimated to grow continuously. A good software design should be highly concerned with this continuous evolution of a software product. In earlier days procedural paradigm was followed in order to design software products. But this approach became obsolete to meet the requirements of products with larger in size and increased complexity. Out of the many alternatives, object oriented paradigm has been considered to be the most appropriate and popular one. Object Oriented Design (OOD) aims to design a software product based on some objects determined during the analysis phase. For OOD a common language is required to be understood. Unified Modeling Language (UML) is the most popular formalism for this purpose. \n9.3.1 Object-Oriented Concepts \nObject-Oriented Analysis and Design is defined as the investigation of objects and their collaboration, to form fully functional software systems. UML is generally referred to as the successor of \nobject-oriented (OO) analysis and design. \nThe purpose of object-oriented analysis and design are – \n• To identify the objects of a system \n• To identify the relationships between them \n• To create a design of the system, which can be converted to a real world executable environment using object-oriented languages \n• Polymorphism: Mechanism of the same entity existing indifferent forms \n9.4 UNIFIED MODELING LANGUAGE (UML) \nThe Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a graphic based language for visualizing, specifying, documenting and constructing the artifacts of a software-intensive system. UML was designed by the Object Management Group abbreviated as OMG and UML 1.0 specifications were drafted by the same in January 1997. \n• UML is not the same as other common programming languages like C++, Java, and COBOL etc. \n• UML is a pictorial language most commonly used for designing software blueprints. \n• Modelling software systems is not the only use of UML, it can also be used to model non-software systems, for insta","cbCaihAMMegfpRPC","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaihAMMegfpRPC","pdf",315147,"English","# UNIT 9: Object Oriented Software Design\n## 9.1 Learning Objectives\n## 9.2 Introduction\n## 9.3 Object Oriented Software Design\n## 9.4 Unified Modeling Language (UML)\n## 9.5 Modeling Types\n## 9.6 Basic Notations and Diagrams\n## 9.7 Class Diagrams\n## 9.8 Use Case Diagrams\n## 9.9 Activity Diagrams\n## 9.10 Let Us Sum Up\n## 9.11 Further Readings\n## 9.12 Answers to Check Your Progress\n## 9.13 Model Questions","[{\"question\":\"What will you learn after completing Unit 9?\",\"answer\":\"You will be able to describe UML, object oriented concepts, and basic notations and diagrams, and to draw class diagrams, use case diagrams, and activity diagrams.\"},{\"question\":\"Why is object oriented design considered appropriate compared to procedural design?\",\"answer\":\"Procedural design became obsolete for larger and more complex products, while object oriented paradigm supports designing with objects defined during analysis and manages continuous evolution of requirements.\"},{\"question\":\"What is UML and what is it used for?\",\"answer\":\"UML is a graphic based language for visualizing, specifying, documenting, and constructing artifacts of software-intensive systems, and it is also used to model non-software systems such as manufacturing process flows.\"}]","Unit 9 - Object Oriented Software Design | PDF",1792964093]
