was still unfinished, and the collaboration with Stravinsky, planned for theend of the year, had not even begun. The survival ofUnder Milk Wood is a remarkable piece of good fortune, for it was not completed until Thomas came within amonth of his death, though he had worked intermittentlyon the play for nearly ten years. There was no time forany final revision of the text by the poethimself, but we arejustified in regarding what he has left as a complete work. \nThe publication of Thomas's Collected Poems in I952marked the end of one period of his literary develop-ment;after this, according to his own words,he intendedto turn from the strictly personal kind of poetry toa more public form of expression, and to large-scaledramatic works in particular, where there would bescope for all his versatility, for his gifts of humour andcharacterization as well as his genius for poetry. It isfortunate that at least one of these projected works hasbeen preserved for us. \nUnder Milk Wood,a Play for Voices grew by a slow.andnatural process, and the story of that growth, knownonly to a few friends of the poet,is most interesting.Thomas liked small towns by the sea best, and smallWelsh towns by the sea best of all. Before the war helived for many years in Laugharne, and during the warfor a time in New Quay;there is no doubt that he \nabsorbed the spirit of these places and, through imagina-tion and insight, the spirit of all other places like them. When, more than ten years ago,a short talk was com-missioned by the B.B.C.,the description of a smallWelsh seaside town was a natural choice of subject.Quite Early One Morning, short as it is,and written somany years ago,is closely related to Under Milk Wood. There is the same sequence of time, though limited tothe morning hours and in winter, not spring;we hearthe dreams of the sleeping town and see the sleepersgetting up and going about their business.Captain TinyEvans and the Rev.Thomas Evans are pygmies beside theblind sea-captain and the reverend bard of Llaregyb, butMiss Hughes ‘The Cosy'recalls Myfanwy Price,Man-chester House stands ready for Mog Edwards, and thehusbands of Mrs Ogmore-Pritchard are already at
