The guide prompts analysis of Katarina Bishop’s motivations after earlier events, the significance of key names and characters, and the meaning of the novel’s title. It also encourages evaluation of character dynamics, narrative perspective, relationships shaping the story’s world, and the impact of settings on overall structure. Classroom connections extend learning with gem-myth research, Monte Carlo background investigation, and character-based playlist and art creation.","Discussion GuiDe \nHYPERION BOOKS \nAbout the Book \nKatarina Bishop has worn a lot of labels in her short life life. Friend. Niece. Daughter. Thief. But for the last two months she’s simply been known as the girl who ran the crew that robbed the greatest museum in the world. That’s why Kat isn’t surprised when she’s asked to steal the infamous Cleopatra Emerald so it can be returned to its rightful owners. \nThere are only three problems. First, the gem hasn’t been seen in public in thirty years. Second, since the fall of the Egyptian empire and the suicide of Cleopatra, noone who holds the emerald keeps it for long, and in Kat’s world, history almost always repeats itself. But it’s the third problem that makes Kat’s crew the most nervous, and that is simply . . . the emerald is cursed. \nKat might be in way over her head, but she’s not going down without a fight. After all, she has her best friend—the gorgeous Hale—and the rest of her crew with her as they chase the Cleopatra around the globe, dodging curses, realizing that the same tricks and cons her family has used for centuries are useless this time. \nWhich means, this time, Katarina Bishop is making up her own rules. \n2 \nDiscussion Questions \n1 After successfully recovering the missing art and securing her father’s safety in Heist Society, Kat retreats from her crew and begins working independently to assist Mr. Stein in retrieving art stolen from its rightful owners by the Nazis. In your opinion, why does Kat feel a need to continue with this endeavor? Do you agree with her decision to work alone? Why or why not? \n2 Explain the significance of Visily Romani’s name. What role does Romani play in getting Kat to accept the request Constance Miller makes of her? Why does Kat take the use of Visily Romani’s name so seriously? \n3 Who are your favorite or least favorite secondary characters in the novel? What is it about these characters that you find endearing or disturbing? \n4 Given that Kat no longer sees herself as a thief but rather “more of a return artist, a repossession specialist . . . a highly uncommon criminal,” she could be perceived as more vulnerable. Do you agree? Using textual evidence as support, make a case for your position. \n5 Consider the variety of settings for Uncommon Criminals; name the three places you believe to be most important to the story. Using textual evidence from the book, explain why you find them to be significant to the overall story structure. \n6 How would you describe Kat’s family? With whom does she seem closest? To what extent are the relationships of these characters shaped by the world around them? To what extent do their relationships shape that world? \n7 Explain the significance of the title, Uncommon Criminals. Beyond Kat, in what ways does the title accurately describe her team? \n8 While discussing stealing the Cleopatra Emerald with Gabrielle, Hale tells Kat,“Of course you’re going to do it. I mean, it’s what you do now, isn’t it? Travel the world, righting wrongs. A one-woman recovery crew.” Explain Hale’s attitude toward Kat’s actions. Do you believe he is justified for feeling this way? Why or why not? \n3 \n9 Describe Kat. What makes her a dynamic character? Is she the type of person you would want to befriend? Why or why not? Does she remind you of anyone you know? Does anything about her remind you of yourself? \n10 Maggie tells Kat,“There is no honor among thieves, Katarina. No matter what you might have read in storybooks.” Do you agree? Why or why not? \n11 Uncommon Criminals is told in the third person; how would the story be different if Kat or another secondary character were telling it? Do you thinking changing the point of view would make the story better or worse? Why? \n12 How would you characterize the relationship between Kat and Hale? Do you feel it that it changes over the course of the novel? If so, in what ways? \n13 Uncle Eddie tells Kat,“We are very much alike Katarina . . . I was once a brill","cbCaibef2JEoJIkA","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaibef2JEoJIkA","pdf",2881966,1,8,"English","en",105,"# Discussion Questions\n## Classroom Connections Reading, Writing, and Researching","[{\"question\":\"Why does Kat continue working to right wrongs even after earlier challenges?\",\"answer\":\"The guide asks readers to explain Kat’s need to keep assisting with retrieval efforts and to judge whether working alone is a sound choice, supported by the narrative’s details.\"},{\"question\":\"What is the significance of Visily Romani’s name, and how does Romani influence Kat’s acceptance of the request?\",\"answer\":\"Readers are prompted to explain how the name matters and what role Romani plays in helping Kat accept Constance Miller’s request, including why Kat takes the name seriously.\"},{\"question\":\"How might the story change if Kat or another secondary character narrated it instead of the third-person viewpoint?\",\"answer\":\"The guide asks readers to consider differences in tone, information access, and character insight, and to argue whether changing the point of view would improve or worsen the story.\"}]","Uncommon Criminals -
